Was Redmond's decision to dump IE for the Mac an anomaly? Or a step in the unraveling of the pair's tenuous partnership? After Microsoft dropped the bombshell last week that it is ceasing all work on future Internet Explorer releases for the Mac, industry watchers have been wondering aloud what's next for the dynamic duo. It's an interesting time to speculate, on the eve of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference next week. For its part, Microsoft is swearing up and down that it won't off Office for the Mac. And a number of Microsoft watchers seemingly believe the Redmondians — pointing to Microsoft's growing paranoia over OpenOffice and StarOffice as a big reason why it won't dump its only non-Windows version of its desktop office suite. | ||

| I love MS Office for my Mac. It's pretty to look at and has a great feature set. Bloat or no bloat it's a great set of productivity tools. MS has already said they're hard at work on the next version of Office for the Mac. My only complaint is that it's over-priced. I think $229 for the whole suite and $119 for an upgrade is very fair for what the package does. If another company, Apple or not, comes out with something better I'd try it. For now I'll stick with Office from Microsoft. |

JaggedFlame, you have to remember.. that Linux and openoffice are grasping for ANYTHING to legitamize themselves. So, a mere mention or acknowledgement that a competing product exists... gives them reason to celebrate.
I'm with you though... an "acknowledgement" isnt much to celebrate. If history holds true, its actually disastrous. In the past, the only chance you had to out-compete MSFT was to stay under their radar. |

#4, I don't think that is quite fair. If a company wants to compete, they have to have a competitive product. Unfortunately, many of our young people today are not interested in programming, and those that are want to make the big bucks. So.... they work for a company that they know will provide that, and the security too.
I sometimes wish that all of the Microsoft bashers would board the S.S. Minnow for a 3 hour tour. LOL But then, they can't help themselves because they bought stock in Netscape, Apple, Oracle, Sun, etc.... I invested my money wisely. (it is in my mattress) ROFLOL |

5, 7 years to go?
If they have the chance... The problem with the companies producing open source applications is their business plan or in other words the lack of it. I don't know how many of them will be still in the market 5-7 years from now. This post was edited by RickNL on Sunday, June 22, 2003 at 06:13. |

Here's my take on everything:
a.) MS has already said that there won't be an IE 7. All future versions of IE will merely be part of the OS and be part of Windows Update and you'll hardly know its there. b.) Why would they do this? Why would they make IE irrelevant in the browser race now? My thought: because they have something up their sleeve that will make browsers themselves irrelevant c.) What could they have up their sleeve to make browsers irrelevant? I'm not sure. If I knew that, I wouldn't be telling you guys, I'd be starting my own company. |

Bombshell?
Frankly, I don't know of a single person that really gives a Rats-Patootie about MSIE/Mac. It's been a terrible, slow browser for years now, and there have been superior alternatives available. It just doesn't matter. TL |
