Ok, someone correct me if I'm wrong here...
My understanding of the history of Kashmir is this. After India was let go as a British colony, there was a bit of a squabble between the Hindu and Muslim groups. It was decided to divide the colony into two nations, Pakistan and India from this religious squabble. To decide what sections went to which nation, each regional governor was allowed to vote.
Apparently in the case of Kashmir, the governor waited until the last minute, and then choose to become part of India. For some reason this upset the Pakistanis who then launched an army across the border, and this battle has been going on off and on since like 1947. As I understood it, the region was divided between Muslim and Hindu, and the Pakistanis thought it was mostly Muslim so it should have went with them?
Someone mentioned Bangladesh... That was originally part of Pakistan but became independent in the 1970s. I haven't read as much about that, was that peaceful? Why did it go independent?
BTW, I find it interesting how most of the worlds problems today are the fault of something the British did. :)
