Industry questionnaire could delay Microsoft anti-trust decision | |

In the latest development in the European Microsoft anti-trust case, the European Commission has sent out a questionnaire to music and film sector stakeholders, asking them what they think about the technologies used to stream media over the internet. This move means that any conclusion to the five-year-old case could be as much as a year away. In the case, the Commission has alleged that, by bundling Windows Media Player with the Windows operating system, the software giant has restricted competition in the internet media player market, undermining the market potential of QuickTime and RealPlayer.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I cannot recall a version of Windows that didn't have Windows Media Player 'bundled' as of version 3.1 (I wouldn't know the previous versions of Windows). Why is this an issue now? Is it now too good to be bundled?
Shouldn't an OS be capable of playing music files? Is there any OS nowadays that does not come with a media player? |

Well, the problem is 'cause MS Windows is dominant desktop OS, thus anything bundled with it is an easy way to get the advantage over any competing product. It's hard to tell what should and what shouldn't be a part of the Windows - you put anything in it and automatically you have the advantage.. For the record: I use MS Windows, this was not a flame; just my $0.02 :) This post was edited by gonzo on Thursday, June 12, 2003 at 01:48. |
