Microsoft to Acquire Antivirus Technology From GeCAD Software | |

Microsoft Corp. today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the intellectual property and technology assets of GeCAD Software Srl., a provider of antivirus technology based in Bucharest, Romania. Microsoft’s acquisition of GeCAD’s technology will help secure customers by providing antivirus solutions for Microsoft® products and services. In addition to developing new solutions, Microsoft will use the GeCAD engineering expertise and technology to enhance the Windows® platform and extend support for third-party antivirus vendors so they can provide customers with increasingly secure and comprehensive levels of virus protection. | ||

Why would Norton, etc., worry about this? It'll likely be used for an API that third parties can plug into.

| No, I just know what I'm downloading when I go to download something.... and no, I actually don't have a floppy drive on this system... don't see why that would matter anyway. |

I'm with you CPUGuy, I don't use any AV products. If you want your P4 running the same speed as 386, run an AV product on it!
All my PCs are connected to internet 24/7. I've yet to get a single virus in the past 10 years or so. I'll bet most people that get infected by new virus already run some sort of AV products on their machine. After all, new definition files for Norton or McAfee arrive ONLY AFTER the virus is already out for days if not weeks. |

| I'm with you, CPUGuy, even though to most it sounds like a bad idea. I've never had a virus on any of my home computers, either. I stayed away as I've seen Norton slow fast machines to a crawl; we use Trend Micro at work and it is fantastic, but I don't have any realtime scan at home. I resort to the free online scanner from Trend if I'm doing troubleshooting, but so far I've been virus-free. I wouldn't have a problem with installing one, but I guess I'd rather save the money. For me, it seems that if you're informed and careful, you won't get into much trouble with viruses. Maybe I'll get burned someday, but for now, I'm staying away from realtime scanners on my home machines.... |

I used to be with you guys.. till..
It's kinda funny. Because why I started using an AV app has nothing to do with the PCs. Last year someone broke in my house. In my whole life I never thought that it could happen to me. It was one of those things that happened to 'other' people. Having realised that things happening to 'other' people might some day happen to me too, next day when i was in front of my PC I decided to install Mcafee. (Though I now use Norton) Last year I had a P3 800 with 512KB RAM, and you really could feel the performance decrease especially with Norton. In my experience Mcafee worked far faster than Norton. Today I have a P4 2.66 with 1GB RAM and you hardly feel the performance difference between running the AV app and not running it. (except when you copy files or install an application - then I disable the auto-scan option) |

Last time I used AV software for personal use... was 7 years ago... when I was an avid Mac user.
Now forget I revealed that weakness of my past! |

Up until about 5 years ago I used to have this same belief that I didn't need antivirus software.
I don't have that opinion any more. |
