Dear Steve Ballmer: Concerning Linux and your memo/exhortation of June 4, I'm pleased to see you've finally recognized--publicly, at least--the threat posed to Microsoft by Linux. Some in the Linux community must imagine you with a sort of "deer in the headlights" look, not quite sure of your fate but certain it can't be good. They could see your memo as a legitimization of Linux, an admission by Goliath that David has a point after all. The Linux hardcore must be hooting and hollering and marking June 4 as a future national day of liberation from the evil empire. | ||

Robert, this story is plain B.S. Linux is no threat to Microsoft. It isn't even a true point and click OS. When was the last time you just double clicked on an icon to upgrade the kernel of any major Linux distro? Or for that matter, double clicked on an icon to install OpenOffice? RealPlayer for Linux? Update any portion of the OS without using line commands?
No, Linux will be a niche OS as long as it continues to use the archane Unix line command structure to do updates, and installs of major programs, etc... IMO, if Steve Ballmer read this, he is probably laughing outloud at the absurdity of this story. |

| Try installing RealPlayer. Then try upgrading the kernel to the latest version. And you didn't download OpenOffice. That is what I am talking about, downloaded software that you can point and click on. You have to enter archane line commands like RPM -Uvh or worse, use some unzip program that installs it to a directory, but you don't have access to, so you have to su root, and then you can't mistype one letter, or you have to start again. And sometimes, (too often for me), you muck your system. I have hosed both Mandrake 9.x and Redhat 9.0 plus earlier distros doing routine maintenance. I have been working with Linux since Redhat 5.0 And while it has been getting better, it is NO competition for Microsoft Windows. |

EWWHWW: Don't open your mouth if you don't know what you're talking about.
You CAN click on some icons and install just about ANY program available for linux with certain distros without ever touching a command line (even dependencies are automatically solved for you if any exist). The fact that you haven't seen this work or don't know about it shows how limited your Linux knowledge really is. Upgrade your kernel with one click? Why the hell would you want to? When was the last time you upgraded your Windows kernel with one click? Oh nevermind, there ARE no kernel upgrades for windows, you have to buy the next version and do an UPGRADE (which never works right). If you are gonna knock Linux, you should at least try to find REAL issues rather than make yourself look like a fool by saying you can't click on an icon to install openoffice. |

#4, Heal thyself. And, I forgot to mention the biggie with Linux. Installing drivers. Yes, that big bugaboo. In Windows, I download a driver update, point and click. In Linux, it is a major pain. When was the last time you tried to install soundcard drivers into Linux? Or how about just gaining access to NTFS partitions in Redhat 9.0? Point and click there? Hell no.
"Upgrade your kernel with one click? Why the hell would you want to? " Why? Because it simplifies the process. This is how I have envisioned this process: For Newbies: 1.Point and click on the kernel update 2. The menu opens with the previous settings loaded automatically 3. All settings that could damage the OS are greyed out to prevent the novice from changing them 4. New features that can be used by this newbies comptuter are spotted using an AI program, and are higlighted in the menu for easy spotting for the newbie. 5. Save and close. The program saves both the orginal kernel, and the new one. And places both in the grub menu. (or whatever menu the newbie is using) And then prompts to reboot. For Experts: 1. Point and click on the Kernel update 2. The menu opens with previous settings loaded auto.. 3. All settings that could damage the OS are NOT greyed out, but presumes the user knows what is what. 4. New features are not highlighted, but can by ticking an option box. 5. Save and close. The program saves only the kernel or kernels the user chooses. And then prompts to reboot. Why is that so hard to envision? And remember, this website is ActiveWin.com, not ActiveLinux.com I have been coming here since it was ActiveIE.com with the advent of MSIE 4.0 Beta. a) What makes you think I don't remember? Wasn't it you who was spewing uninformed statements about linux in the first place? b) So what if you came here since it was ActiveIE? Do you want a prize for that or something? |
