It's Friday night, the start of a holiday weekend, and, unlucky you, you have a major project to finish up for work. Rather than go into the office, you're all set up to telecommute from home. Wanting to be as secure as possible, you download the latest updates for Windows XP from the Microsoft Windows Update site. But, after rebooting, you find you can't connect to your company's VPN. Worse, you can't even get online. You call your company's IT department. If you can't reach them because it's the start of a weekend, you call a professional instead. The tech support guy asks, "Have you installed any new software recently?" You say yes, you installed one little Microsoft update that was supposed to enhance the security of your VPN connection. | ||

i think this has soemtiong to do with "VPN" virtual private network. I suppose this is also for businesses, etc... and the likes...
i also installed this patch and my internet conection still works... |

The patch itself doesn't kill your connection. What happens is that a 3rd-party firewall you have installed may be incompatable with the protocol update and end up blocking traffic.
The KB article that the ZD author all but dismissed, talks about ports that need to be opened when using this update. From KB Article--------------- Interoperability and Known Issues NAT-T and Firewall Rulesets Because the new NAT-T code is designed around the IETF RFC 3193 and draft-02 of the IETF NAT-T specification, for these services to run through a firewall, you must open the following ports in the firewall rules: L2TP – User Datagram Protocol (UDP) 500, UDP 1701 NAT-T – UDP 4500 ESP - Internet Protocol (IP) protocol 50 This may affect server configurations for third-party gateways. |

From an earlier post in another thread:
Microsoft has released an update package to enhance the current functionality of the Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) and Internet Protocol security (IPSec) on computers that are running Windows XP or Windows 2000. This update includes improvements to IPSec to better support virtual private network (VPN) clients behind network address translation (NAT) devices by implementing NAT as specified in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) RFC 3193 and draft-02 of the IETF NAT-T specification. The update also includes additional support for stronger IPSec protection by using the 2048-bit Diffie-Hellman algorithm (Group 14). IPSEC listens on UDP port 500 and UDP port 4500, if a none-Microsoft application or firewall is using the port -or- is being blocked by personal firewall even if the ports are opened by configuring the Personal firewalls advanced options - this problem may occur. Although this problem may seem like a error, it is in-fact just IPSEC using its default security setting, which is to make the connection safe. But in this case it can unfortunately cause loss of internet functionality. |
