Microsoft loses big deal in Munich | |

STEVE BALLMER, the Vole's whirling, sweat-machine monkey-boy CEO, seems to have struck out in Munich. That is the third-largest cityscape in Germany, gentle readers. As such, it's a major loss for Microsoft. The story goes that Ballmer interrupted his skiing vacation to drop into Munich and offer them a 90% discount on Microsoft's software, countering that city's Linux and Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) procurement. It would seem that Ballmer's "generous" offer will not be successful.

Interesting you didn't pick up the most. But I guess that logic of the Linux zealot would argue that Linux is less buggy than windows to (your man Flight is going down in flames over at: http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=18057&Group=1)
The question is, who made the decision...someone who made the decision based on fact, ROI numbers, features, manageability, etc...or OS religion, political views, or past working experience. I would be very interested to see his/her past work history or hobbies...anyone know where I can find that? Regarding municipal governments, I don't care what OS they use as long as it is useful and stable. Municipal governments have a tendency of slow innovation (not all of them, at least in the US)...so maybe an OS trying to compete by being "good enough" (Windows-3 years) won't measurably impact the services they provide. Now running a flexible multibillion dollar company (or a small business) with a platform (take Linux, as an example) that is harder to deploy (server and desktop), less usable (really, you can’t even argue on this one), and doesn’t even come close to the management capabilities as the Windows platform (SMS 2003, ADS, roaming profiles, RIS, AD, etc. etc. etc.) And before you go saying Linux is winning or taking over the world...please give the percentage of cities with technology running on Linux to those on MS or other proprietary software. MS likes competition, so I am all for Linux moving up to the 2% mark on OS share. #3, if you really believe that one defeat means a CEO should resign...actually, I can’t even respond to this...because it is almost as mindless as comment #4. | I see this as a good thing. Even a market this big doesn't really hurt Microsoft in the big picture, and it will provide an interesting test case for all the Linux zealots who insist Linux is the best solution. |

RMD - I agree. This is pretty much a non-event. As I've said all along, the global computing market is huge, even a 1% share is a considerable amount of income to a company. I see no tidal wave here. Cities have switched to Linux in the past, most of them have switched back. Ohwell. |
