As Microsoft gears up to introduce Windows Server 2003 on Thursday, an InternetWeek QuickPoll shows that the company is becoming its own worst enemy. Fully a third of respondents in the unscientific poll said inertia, or satisfaction with Microsoft products, is their greatest barrier to upgrading to the latest version of server Windows. The second-place obstacle was Microsoft's pricing, according to about a quarter of respondents. And users cited their own IT budget constraints as the third most common obstacle. | ||

Over time niche features become mainstream.
So if people are generally satisfied with Microsoft products, where does that leave Linux which is motivated entirely from hatred of Microsoft products? |

Example? Visual Studio, which I used for years, continually is essentially pushing the MS way... they want to take away the make files (have they yet), generate only MFC code, integrate with VSS, amplify platform dependencies. Not just MS, any company... it makes sense, it's fair. But in that case no one can whine if the customer or tool user decides that model just isn't in their best interest. I'd like tools that want to work together, that desire interoperability.
Ever heard of something called COM (the backbone of pre .NET)? How can they amply other platforms when behinds the scenes a Microsoft OS is required? And there are other version control tools out there besides Source Safe. Why don’t you go and code in Java and not have to bother with Microsoft then? On the Foxpro issue, will MS still be required to give tech support for it on Linux? |
