#6 There are probably many reasons for why Linux it more popular than *BSD at the moment. I can't give you a great insight into it but I would say that the central issue is over the license used. The BSD license is really a "here you go, do whatever you like with this, just mention the fact you used this code" type of license, which is exactly why a lot of developers like it and also why many don't like it. And you can see this by the fact that the BSD and the Linux camps don't get along too well.
The developers for Linux applications are prepared to give their code away for free but in such a way that if someone uses that code and enhances it then they should give those enhancements away for free so that everyone benefits. Regardless of wether you argee with this or not, or any of the Microsoft zealots, this is what they believe in. They don't want to write code and then have some company go off and steal their code without giving anything back.
At the moment, due to those beliefs or thought processes, we have a lot more Linux developers than we do FreeBSD developers, which is why Linux is the more popular of the two.
