True, it's a Microsoft page, but I'm still curious as to why anyone would want to do this. Now, don't get me wrong, I have Server installed as my primary OS on my laptop for development reasons, but I'm not trying to make a desktop OS out of a Server OS. If I need a desktop OS, I install one as a dual boot option, or in a virtual machine. This post was edited by mikekol on Sunday, April 06, 2003 at 16:06. |

mikekol - I'm curious. Why do you have Server installed for development reasons?
XP supports everything Win2k has. Although admittedly we do use Server for our build machines. |

| soda, I can't answer for mikekol, but I have worked with Win2003 (and Win2K previously) on my laptop during its beta phase, I travel a lot and having a portable AD test bed has come in handy before to demonstrate functionality or provide examples to clients. Obviously I would not run normally in this configuration, but thats the joys of multiple OS boots and VMWare. :) |

I do some development that requires access to AD, as well as some other services that don't come with XP (DNS / DHCP Server, etc). Every now and then, I'm at a "connected" area where all of the services I need are hosted on another machine, so I don't need to be running them locally. However, it's nice to have the ability to continue my work in a "non-connected" environment.
And yes, I have tried developing in XP with a Server running in a VM. It works just as well, but it's one more thing that's running which isn't absolutely necessary. Just a personal preference on my part. |
