If you're still using the Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating system, it's high time you consider moving on with your computer life. There are a lot better things that you can do with your computer than mess around with an ancient OS. Besides, Windows XP, on the market since Oct. 25, 2001, has proven itself far superior to all the Microsoft operating systems that came before it in just about every facet of computing. Still need convincing? Let's take a look at the top five reasons you should leave Windows 9x behind.

The primary family computer at home is a Windows 98 machine that runs just fine. Just think how much more money Microsoft would have gotten if I had upgraded at every opportunity. My other desktops and laptop (all used for software development) run various editions of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It is not uncommon for me to find users who are very satisfied with their Windows 9x (and Office 95 and 97 for that matter). However, the article does bring out some good points about testing for compatibility before upgrading.
Sometimes I think techies see the world only in the latest and greatest light when, in fact, many people just use their computer to get their work done...

CH, although "getting their work done" is the primary concern for anyone who acutally uses their computer, as time goes on, it will become increasingly more difficult to get that same work done on an older OS. Specifically, I mention that my specific company had to migrate to Office 2000 because all (and I mean all) of the companies we were doing business with were using O2K at the time (early adoptation) and we were unable to view the file attachments that were being sent.
Moving on to better things is not bad, it's good--when done for the right reasons.

If you're happy with 9x, then there is no big reason to switch. But if you're happy with 9x, you're also among a very small minority of computer users.

#6,
I have a P-200 laptop with only 64MB runs Win2000 quite happily. The stability of the new OS (2000 and XP) can not be matched with any Win9x system. All my laptops(running 2000 or XP) haven't been rebooted for a long time. I use standby or hibernation exclusively. Try wake your Win9x system up couple times and see how quickly your system stops responding entirely.

Byron, probably because OS X sucks :-). I think Leo Laport is the only advid user. He can't even convince his buddy Mr. Norton to switch from Windows XP to Mac OS X ;-).

There is a segment of the user population who has no interest on connecting to the internet, of playing games, of buying new software... All they use their computer for is running Quicken and occasionally typing up a letter.
For them Windows 95 is more than adequate. I know this, because my parents still have a 486DX4/120 running Win95 hooked up to a Deskjet 500 printer.
However they also have a Celeron 333 running Win2k pro that I setup for them two years ago. They're happier with that machine, and use it to connect to the internet and check email, browse web, etc.

I love it when someone says they're happy and someone else decides to tell them that in short order they will regret it or that they paid too much.
What did you think Montana--Byron got it without paying for it and he has no idea what the price is? Jesus.

Not to start a flame, but Bryon I am happy for you.
Use what works, but don't expect me to come and help you if your Mac dies. I'd rather sit and laugh at the poor thing.

Unless you run DOS games, clearly you should be not be running Windows 9x. No questions. But, I mean, come on, who can NOT play Dark Forces? :)

#23 - thats like me saying ill sit and laugh at your PC when that does the, same (which does happen far more often). I'm happy with what I've got, I know people around here are either surprised i got a Mac and enjoy it or just don't like hearing happy mac stories, but just cause I created the best Windows site around doesn't mean I am blind when it comes to trying different operating systems!

#26 - My reply was in terms of assuming you meant crash when you stated dying, if that isn't what you meant then I'm sure both of us would be pretty peeved if either system died. I was just replying to you saying you would be happy about my mac dying, but in reality neither PC nor Mac's die more than others, yes PC's crash more and have more hardware problems but in the end i was just replying to an earlier post not trying to praise one OS or the other!

#28 - exactly, if you are happy with any operating system you have from Windows 95 to XP there is no reason to upgrade unless there is something you really want from one of the newer versions. Those who have slower PC's are far better off with Windows 95 or 98
