Microsoft Internally Corrects XP SP1 Slowdown | |

Windows XP Service Pack 1 brought about many fixes for Microsoft's flagship operating system, but a change to the memory management system caused applications on some machines to run much slower. A source told BetaNews that most performance complaints received by Microsoft came from users running a Pentium 4 processor. Microsoft recently acknowledged the problem and privately issued a hotfix, but a patch has not yet publicly appeared on Windows Update or Microsoft's Download Center. | ||

| Why does Microsoft make it so hard to get a hold of some of these hotfixes? Does anyone know where I can download it without having to call them? |

Oh, man do I agree. It's beyond annoying. It's frustrating as hell to see right before your eyes a fix for your problem, but instead of a stupid, little, simple link you have to call some phone dude (or dudette) at Microsoft to get it. It makes NO damned sense whatsoever. TL |

It is because the fix is not fully tested. Who knows what else will break because of this fix. It is not the first time that Microsoft releases some patch and break something else. Unless, of course, it is a security patch. |

| Is there a sample list of applications that this problem affects? The product boxes do not say "aggressive memory allocation". :~)- |

| So you're saying before applying SP1 you never saw these things and immediately after you did? If that's not the case, there could be 1001 explanations for such issues. |

Q1 2004, which seems too long considering that SP1 came out around six months ago.

I applied this patch... I found a link to it on neowin.
Anyway, it actually makes a signifigant difference. Now when RTCW shuts down the machine is actually responsive, whereas before it'd sit grinding for about 30 seconds trying to work out memory issues. I have another machine running XP which I host a number of VMWare sessions on, I think I shall try to patch that next to see if they start responding better. |
