Latest Windows 2000 patch can lock system | |

The patch, announced Monday in security bulletin MS03-007, is incompatible with 12 software fixes for Windows 2000 issued by Microsoft's Product Support Services (PSS) between December 2001 and February 2002. Users running any of those fixes won't be able to reboot their Windows 2000 systems after applying the "critical" patch, according to a revised version of Microsoft's bulletin issued Tuesday. One of my clients go the BSOD after installing this. He did not have sp3 installed. Here was my solution:
Upon installing 815021 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815021, I rebooted and promptly blue screened with STOP ERROR: SESSION5_INITIALIZATION_FAILURE 0x00000071 (0x0, 0x0, 0x0) I've trimmed the useless "0"'s. No GUI mode would work (safe mode, AD Restore Mode, etc). What I did to fix it: 1) Using the Win2k server installation disk, I booted to the Recovery Console Repair mode. I copied the new %windir%\system32\ntdll.dll (which was installed by the hotfix) to c:\. 2) I copied the %windir%\$NtUninstallQ815021$\ntdll.dll to %windir%\system32 3) Reboot I used System Commander to boot up and replace the file. |

Yes disable autoupdate would be a wise decision. Actually i just modified my sp3 unpdate.inf to disable it immediately afterinstall.
