Xbox cracking project goes Linux | |

The Neo Project, a group of computing hobbyists using distributed computing techniques to crack security challenges, has released a Linux version of its Xbox cracking software. Operation Project X is a small, downloadable application that uses otherwise idle PC resources to try to guess the 2,048-bit encryption code used by Microsoft's Xbox game console. Cracking the security code would allow hackers to run homemade software on unmodified game machines, satisfying a $100,000 hacking contest sponsored by Lindows founder Michael Robertson. | ||

I guess we have to wait until next millennium to see the results :D
Unless, of course, someone leaked the key like the ones used in DVD movie. Or maybe in year 2020, Microsoft releases key in a change of heart for those suffering Linux nuts. |

| #10 Whilst I do not know the insides of the DMCA (as it is completely irrelevant to me and most of the world for that matter).... How can finding/guessing the key be illegal? Wouldn't only the application of that key be illegal if anything? As then it is being used to circumvent some form of protection. |

why try to cure cancer or find extraterrestrial life... when you can waste electricity (hence fossil fuels) on such a worthwhile cause (cracking the xbox key).
The funny thing is... even if they crack the key... SO WHAT?!?! too little too late to do anything. |

gg - The DMCA prohibits reverse engineering of technological protection measures.
So no, it's not legal. It depends on whether anyone prosecutes, though. |

| #13 I've said the same about the scientists involved in making the seedless watermelon... It seems we have enough people involved to search for extra-terrestrial life, try and find a cure for cancer, clone people..... and be able to try and crack the xbox key. |
