Microsoft kicks off giant Office beta program | |

Microsoft Corp. today is releasing the public beta of the next version of Microsoft Office, aiming to reach half a million users in one of its biggest programs ever to test out new software. Office 2003, until now known by the code name Office 11, is set to launch midyear and includes two new applications, a new interface for sorting e-mails in Outlook and several other tweaks that Microsoft hopes will entice customers to shell out for an upgrade to their existing version. | ||

| With the exception of Outlook, all Office XP apps can coexist with Office 2003 apps. FYI - official beta testers should make all comments in the private beta newgroups and not in public forums like this. |

If you're willing to be patient, you won't even have to pay the $20. "Public beta" is really "marketing beta" which means they'll be giving it away at events once they've finished shipping the early copies to schmucks willing to fork over $20.
There is no NDA on public betas. That's why they're public. And even if you're in the technical beta, the NDA says you can talk about things which are already public knowledge, or which Microsoft has already announced publicly. That's why you see beta testers being quoted in the press; after Microsoft touts a particular feature (and they would only do it if the feature were working well in the beta), they want beta testers to be able to say, "Yeah, it really works great!" |

| #6 holedup - those early "schmucks" are the same people that are responsible for 10,000+ installations. In other words, its not some kiddie that cant wait to look at the latest office suite. |
