Isn't that in essence what IBM is doing with its switch to Linux.
While not a desktop client they are certainly lowering he price of the hardware package with the Linux platform.
Or for that matter Sun and its linux offerings over Solaris.
I believe there is enough compition using Publically available code to lower the cost of development of a platform that MS has leeway to offer server at a lower cost.
Further, since even a desktop install of linux can be a server workstation, I can forsee the combination of desktop and standard server to compete with that in the future. At the cost of say a Redhat distribution??
Ok, give me XP, with a DNS server, Media server, and a web server, and I would have pretty much what I need to do a true Homestation network. (and not the very limited web server in pro, (run into its connection issues just doing asp.net samples now) yet alone setting up a web server that handles web services for doing Home automation or video and audio distribution in the house.
