Attacks Could Hurt Sales of Windows XP, PCs | |

Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O distributed its new Windows XP operating system to computer makers three weeks ago, but after last week's devastating air attacks, XP may not provide the boost the technology sector hoped it would, analysts said. Because older computers may not have the processing and memory required to run XP, analysts had expected the launch to spur PC sales. However, the events of Sept. 11 could force Microsoft to slash its marketing plans for Windows XP, analysts said on Tuesday, and sagging consumer confidence may erase any gains that the launch of the new operating system would have provided to struggling technology firms. "We would expect the launch of Windows XP to be more muted," Credit Suisse First Boston said in a research note analyzing the effects of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. | ||

You know, I'm really hoping that this doesn't happen. Not because I want to see an amazing launch of Windows XP, or because I don't care about what happened (trust me, I do), but because I don't want to give those bastards the satisfaction of affecting everything in our lives. I mean, honestly... being reasonable, the attack has touched all of our lives and changed them, and they will never really be the same again... but I don't think that we should roll up into a ball a let them cripple us. I'm not just talking about Microsoft events, I'm talking about everything. We should try to continue with life as best as we can, and show these *things* that, while they may hurt us, and they may bloody us, we will not let them dictate what happens here. You're right. We are having tough times, and this attack isn't going to make any of it any easier. It looks like you're very angry about this situation, as are most people. It also looks like in your "realism" you've given up. I hope most people aren't like that, because that means the terrorists won. That means that the terrorists broke our wills... not just our buildings. What you're saying is essentially "well, we were screwed before, and now we're totally, amazingly uber-screwed. We should all cry and give up because it's only going to get worse." You're right. It is going to get worse, but only if people have that attitude. This is a terrible time for the US, and yes, many people are going to lose their jobs. My point isn't that those things don't matter, they do. My point is that if we have a positive outlook, even while accepting the negative things going on around us, we'll get through it, and we'll have prevailed. Should we walk around with big, happy, stupid smiles on our faces? No. (Please everyone, don't. I don't think I could take it...) Does that mean that we shouldn't admit when we're 'down and out'; that we should admit that we're hurting? Absolutely not. It means that we shouldn't give up, because then we lose, and they win. And by the way, let's not turn this into a "Windows sucks" yelling match. We all have our own opinions, and that's the way it is. If you think this attack had ANYTHING to do with Microsoft or any other business in America, you've got some severe mental disabilities. I'm not even going to point out all the problems with what you wrote, because it's really not that important. This "so-called war" is about combatting terrorism; it has nothing to do with business. I can't believe that you are actually using something as awful as the attacks on the East Coast, in which thousands died, to try to underscore your own agenda. Go ahead, hate MS with all the strength you've got... I don't care. But how dare you diminish what happened to those people - to all of us - by saying that we should be concentrating on Microsoft, simply because you have some sort of vendetta against them. #13, sometimes people just hate you because you are #1( or #2) company or country in the world.
MS does put out less than 1 consumer OS per year. If they do put out more than one OS, it is for different markets. |

First, I would like to apologize for my harsh words, I misunderstood you, and I'm sorry for my accusations. Secondly, I agree with you. In no way is it our 'patriotic duty' to buy Windows XP. The original article said that the Windows XP launch event may be scaled down a bit because of the attack. I was saying that I hope it doesn't happen. Here's why: It doesn't matter that this is a Microsoft thing. It doesn't matter that this is Windows XP. It matters that we are giving in, and allowing this terrible tragedy to continue to change the way we do things. It's not about Windows XP. I don't care if the thing ever comes out. What I do care about is this country, and the people in it. Ideally, I think we need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and say "guess what... we're still here, and we're stronger than ever. You did NOT destroy our way of life... you did not destroy our resolve, or our wills... you just reinforced it." I'm not saying that we should make light of the events that transpired. They are very, very important, and I know that I will never forget them for as long as I live. I just would like to make sure that the animals who caused this get the message, loud and clear, that they simply bloodied us... they didn't break us. That's all. |

#21. .Net is more than just storing stuff on the web. As a programmer, .Net means producing more reliable and robust code in a shorter time period. I have been using Visual studio .net for a while now and MS has done a great job with this new programming environment.
I buy a lot of stuff on the web using sites like buy.com, amazon.com and others. Each site allows me to have an account which stores my address and credit card information. The problem is I must remember my passwords for all these sites and many sites have my information. If we had a central place for all the information then this would solve both problems. We are not talking about storing movies etc. By the way, sometimes you are not at home and may want to get your address book or some other info. In the future when our connection to the web will be faster than my cable modem ( 2 megs per sec) then maybe the system will be upgraded to store more info. XP is a very good OS. Not everyone should upgrade( That is a personal choice ). I am currently running RC2 and I love it. So far no crashes even when I was running RC1. I almost never run win2000 anymore. I hope MS is successful with .Net. I also hope that their competition will compete instead of just complaining. Then we will have more choices and alternatives.
