Microsoft pulls early Office 2003 beta | |

Microsoft on Wednesday inadvertently provided developers and enterprise customers with early access to the second testing version of the next version of Office. The Redmond, Wash.-based company posted Office 2003 Beta 2 on its Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site on Wednesday, with access available to individuals or businesses subscribing to the service. But Microsoft later removed the software, following an inquiry by CNET News.com. With availability of the new beta, Microsoft also accidentally revealed that the official name for the product, code-named Office 11, would be Office 2003. | ||

I like year version numbers, so I can tell when the product came out. I remember that IE 5 was released in March of '99, IE 5.5 in August 2000, and IE 6 September (ish) 2001. I wouldn't have to remember that if they were called IE 99, IE 2000, and IE 2001. I just wish Microsoft would choose a convention - version numbers, years, names, whatever - and stick with it.
If this version of Office is Microsoft Office 2003, then each component better be called Microsoft [appname] 2003 too. Having XP be the name of the suite and 2002 be the version of the apps for Office XP was really dumb. |

lol, you're right. Windows 2000 was release in Feb 2000. Win95/98 might have been correct in their years, but Office 2000, Office 2002, Windows 2002 were all off by a year. I think the rationale for that is the same with cars. At the end of 2002 we could buy the 2003 model year cars. Yes, I think that is dumb, but at least there is some prescedent to it. Then again, if Microsoft releases some product on that convention but others not on that convention, it just leaves us confused.
Regardless of its name, Office 2003 is a nice suite. I'm really pleased with beta 2. |
