Microsoft has several problems with security, in addition to the obvious. The company has a lot of security alerts, yes, and if it's serious about security it has to keep people informed. But security bulletins in their unvarnished form are desperately techie, and will only serve to confuse/scare most users. So don't send them all to everybody? Then you get whacked for 'hiding' problems. Microsoft's preferred solution has been and still is automatic update, but this week it offered a small concession - an email newsletter intended to cover the same territory as the TechNet security notification service, but in less technical language. | ||

If seeing an icon in your sys tray doesn't make you update your system then an email certainly won't. And I am sure that it is going to get lost amongst the credit repair, low mortgage, penis enlargement and college dorm porn emails that we all get.
I am always amused when I go to someone's house and see the auto update icon. They usually say 1. Oh really, that is what that is for? 2. But there are so many update I don't know which critical update that I need :) 3. It will take too long. 4. Then I have to restart 10 million times. 5. Why can't I do all in one shot. |

The real problem is the notice/seal that missing from the box of computers. It should say:
"WARNING: This is a high technology device that should only be used by people who posess extraordinary skills in operating electronic devices. It requires perfection in execution, and a minimum of 10 hours per day of your time dedicated to making sure it is in 100% updated, perfect condition at all times. If your VCR is blinking 12:00 then you should not have purchased this product. Return it to your dealer at once for a refund". Of course, I'm being sarcastic. The point is not everyone is an expert like you two, and some people actually buy computers not as a hobby or a job requirement, but simply to try and make their lives a little more organized. Give em' a break. Not everyone eats, breaths and sleeps this stuff. TL |

Not everyone has this "feature" switched on. "3. It will take too long. " On a 56K modem it can take fairly long but this is hardly an excuse. "4. Then I have to restart 10 million times. " No but even XP needs to be restarted for certain updates. "5. Why can't I do all in one shot. " Sometimes you can't. There are several updates which have to be applied first followed by a restart (see 4) followed by installing the next lot of updates and potentially another restart at the end of that. #6: "I guess there are a few SQL admins who don't either when it comes to updating." What about all those running Visual Studio etc that come with MSDE? I'm not sure what the solution to the 'patching problem' is but like others have pointed out I doubt email is the solution. The only sure way to have everyone up to date is auto-update and most people will be against auto-update for a whole lot of different reasons. |
