Microsoft may get 'Slammed' in Korea | |

A South Korean rights group may take Microsoft to task for the damage caused by the Slammer worm last month. The People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD) is considering a class-action suit against Microsoft for not doing its utmost to prevent the widespread devastation of the bug, the Korea Times reported. Slammer, also known as the Sapphire worm and SQLExp, exploits vulnerabilities in Microsoft SQL 2000 Web servers and causes increased traffic between servers. | ||

Damn MS for not sending a Microsoft specialist to each company with SQL Server/MSDE installed to teach them how to read the numerous bulletins sent out about the problem. In fact they should also go to each office everytime you need to reboot your computer.
Honestly, this is absolutly insane. EVERY software product has patches and MS if very good about getting the word out (Notice I didn't say "perfect"/"great"). Granted its not perfect, but with strides like the Automatic Update for Win2k and WinXP, I personally think MS does the best job out of all the major software companies of getting updates out to their customers. I'm sure that a new Automatic Update will soon support SQL Server/Exchange/Other Backoffice products, prehaps even all major software which MS provides. At some point people need to take some responsibility for their actions/inactions. This trend is becoming a major problem, not only in the IT world. That people would rather blame someone else instead of asking themselves why they did/didn't do what was needed seems to be just moronic in some cases. |

If I were MS, I'd greet them with an audit to see if they should really be running SQL.

I still wonder what would have happened if this had been a patched issue in an OSS product like MySQL. No one to sue. No one to blame but yourself -- incurring the wrath of the penguinistas if it's even implied that it's the programmer's responsibility to make sure everyone has patched their systems. |
