Microsoft Corp. may in the future be forced to lower its software prices as a result of the growth of open source, the company cautioned in its latest filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In its latest 10-Q quarterly filing, Microsoft said that the popularization of the open-source movement continues to pose a significant challenge to its business model. | ||

What!? Competition?

I don't think the Open Source people realize just how bloody large the computing world is today. There's no reason why one company has to dominate other than convenience. Put this into perspective. Apple sells around 3-4 million computers a year and has a 2% marketshare. The total market is somewhere around 200 million new computers/year. There's a good 500 million or so out there built over the past 3 years which are more than capable of running Windows XP. If the OSS world could convince 20 million to switch, it'd still be a drop in the bucket to Microsoft, but it'd be a signifigant revenue for some Linux company. |

has anyone ever read those ridiculous warnings that public companies add to their filings? its crazy. Microsoft even has one that says something about how business could be hurt if sales offices are hurt by bad weather.
