I don't see anything contradictory here. In fact, it makes perfect sense.
Apache accounts for twice as many internet servers as Microsoft does. That's because it's free, supports multiple operating systems (even Windows) and can be very easily turned on in any installation of Linux. Recreationalists love it.
At the same time, Microsoft accounts for three times as many internet servers serving Fortune 1000 companies (roughly, the 1000 strongest companies). This tells me that money is no issue for these large companies, dependable technical support is critical, and they require (don't laugh) security and stability.
The conclusion: free, unsupported software will have a hard time competing for corporate adoption and expensive software will have a hard time competing for recreational adoption. We all knew this. These surveys simply bear that out.
