Linux vs. Mac: The Pitched Battle for Second Place | |

We all know who makes the world's most popular desktop OS. With a greater than 90 percent market share, Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) status is clear. But what's not so clear is: Who's number two? Of the contenders, Mac OS and Linux, which one is leading? Until recently, this question made no sense. Macintosh was inarguably number two. Does Linux have hundreds of retail outlets dedicated to selling its OS? Has Linux ever been promoted with a Super Bowl ad? (No, but I'd like to see a Linux Super Bowl ad, perhaps featuring Linus Torvalds and Eminem rapping together.) | ||

Is it just me, or has anyone else been noticing that like 10/12 stories here are about Linux? Like 1/5 or so are about Mac/Apple.
Granted, most contain the word "Microsoft" somewhere in the article, but... |

And what incentive was that? Service contracts? Are these the incentives that are pushing so many of the Linux distributors into the red quarter after quarter? When will people come to realize that $$$ is what has driven this industry? There's precious little evidence that this is a sustainable business model. Way to hurt the industry, guys. |

I don't feel like being nice to neowin today.
As for Linus and Em, it's more likely that Em would slam Linux. Other than about Hailie and Dre, he doesn't usually say positive things. |
