Linux will emerge as the dominant operating system in corporate data centers, according to a new study by Goldman Sachs. According to the study, IT buyers will use Linux to take advantage of lower-cost, higher-performance Intel-based servers -- and to avoid "premium-priced proprietary systems." Eventually, systems running Linux will displace systems based on Unix and RISC processors. "Many observers confine Linux's enterprise opportunity to the market for low-end 'edge' servers such as file, print, Web, and e-mail servers," the study, entitled "Fear The Penguin," notes. "But we are confident that the technical developments and market forces are in place for it also to become the dominant OS on the higher-end servers of the enterprise data center." | ||

Goldman Sad Sack are the same guys that just gave up a chunk of change to the state of New York for their "predictions" about certain dot bombs a couple of years ago.
"Sad sack's" open sore predictions will come true about the same time that said money extracted by the state of New York will be properly distributed to the injured investors. Hey, I'm holding my breath here! LOL |

... "However, the study notes, Linux will "hamper the movement of Windows into the enterprise data center, an area that Microsoft has only recently begun to target for growth." It will do this by providing an easier migration path from current Unix-based deployments. " I'm sorry, but this article contains no new information. I rate it as redundant, as I've been pointing this out since at least 1995. Although in '95 Linux was only hurting the x86 Unix market(SCO, Solaris, etc)... today it's cutting into the RISC market. But it's still no real threat to the Windows market. (Oh... Psst... I mean both desktop and server when I say Windows) This post was edited by sodablue on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 22:52. |

Yeah, what blue said. This isn't against Windows, it's against Unix.
I wonder if they paid people to come up with this conclusion :) Maybe I'm in the wrong industry... -d |

| These are the same guys that told us how great the AOL/TW merger would be... and how much Microsoft would be hurt by it. |
