I've just posted up my review of the very recently released Microsoft Office Keyboard. The keyboard should have hit most stores in the U.S. last week. Here is a snippet from the review: For those of you who thought that a keyboard is just a keyboard and thus barely any innovations can be added to this old-school device, the Redmond based software giant, proves, once again, that’s not the case. A few months after the introduction of Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft comes back with a new hardware product, a keyboard, dedicated to be used with its top notch Microsoft Office software suite. Though this new keyboard doesn’t feature a revolutionary design, the enhancements are somewhere else. Indeed this keyboard has been incredibly streamlined for productivity with the end user in mind. This new keyboard is clearly the perfect companion for those of you who spend a lot of time writing stuff on their computer. So let’s see how this new typing device can make our lives easier. | ||

On the perfect keyboard the CAPSLOCK key would be swapped with the CTRL key. This would put CTRL back where it belongs... :)
I guess what I was mainly curious about on this keyboard is what it feels like to type on it. As someone who does 90-100 wpm, touch typing feel is very important. Is it exactly like the Internet keyboard? I'm not a huge fan of the split keyboard. I find it tends to get in the way and slows down my typing speed. I haven't had problems with sore wrists since I stopped typing on the DEC LK201 keyboard years back. :) I might buy one of these anyway. I use a Logitech gaming mouse at home, but I miss the capabilities of my Intellimouse Explorer which I brought to work instead. This keyboard would give me that scroll wheel and back and forward buttons. Ideally, if I could figure out how to control all of IE's behavior from the keyboard, I'd be much better off. I'm going to work on that. :) |

CTRL key on many old keyboards used to be to the left of the letter A. Made for typing CTRL-C, etc. much easier. CTRL-ALT-DEL was supposed to be a combination of keys which was difficult to hit, so that's no excuse. Just blame it on IBM's crazy mixed up keyboard design.
Anywho... I stopped at the local Best Buy on the way home from work and they had one of the Office keyboards out on display. So I got a chance to feel it and compare it to the Internet Keyboard Pro, Natural Keyboard Pro, etc. The keys on the Office keyboard are much higher quality. The downstroke is soft yet still has good positive feedback. You can really notice the difference as you hit the keys there is very little horizontal movement. So I bought one, and am going to switch over to it here shortly to see if it's better than my IBM RapidKey. This IBM keyboard is one of the better ones I have used. I prefer the key feel to the original IBM, although nothing compares to those keyboards in terms of ruggedness. The best keyboard ever made was the Northgate Omnikey, which I placed in the closet because it was too valuable to continue use and risk wearing it out. Silly perhaps, but that keyboard belongs in a museum. |

Ah ha! Have the keyboard plugged in and in use.
Actually it's very cool. Definately one of the better feeling keyboards I've used. Certainly better feeling key switches than any previous Microsoft keyboard. I'm not quite as happy about how the front of the keyboard sits. The front lip isn't really a useful wrist rest, and it causes the front to sit up higher than I would normally like. To answer the question from #6, if you hit the F-Lock key, the function keys and such return to normal. The Tab key above the numpad once again is NumLock. I can definately see where this keyboard will become very useful. I like the buttons to the left for copy/paste, etc. I'm giving it a thumbs up right now. |
