As everyone rushes back to the stores today to exchange their gifts, a judge's ruling out of Baltimore might prompt investors to exchange a bit of their Microsoft stock for Sun Microsystems'.
But hold on: It's not yet a decisive defeat for Mr. Softee. And it's not quite a clear-cut victory for Sun. In fact, the biggest beneficiaries might be a few parties not mentioned.
In case you missed it, U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz ruled Monday that Microsoft must include updated versions of Sun's Java software in its Windows operating system.
That's an important victory for Sun in the battle for the hearts and minds of developers, who have a choice of using Java or Microsoft's .Net platform in fashioning a new generation of Web services.
