"Age of Mythology" Catapults to Top-Selling Rank | |

It's official: "Age of Mythology(TM)" is a runaway hit with consumers this holiday season, earning top honors as the best-selling PC game based on retailer revenue in its first three full weeks of release.* As a top entertainment release this holiday season, "Age of Mythology" is backed by a multimillion-dollar global marketing campaign. I used to love AOE, but I just can't get into these games now. It's far too hectic.
You have tons of guys running around the map and it's like herding cats. I wish they'd make an RTS where you could form "battle groups" of certain combinations of units. These groups would be smart (i.e. the archers wouldn't run out into the front, and the priests wouldn't wander into the middle of a catapault attack, etc). You could click a button to build a group and all the various unit-producing buildings would go to work. After a few seconds you'd have a full battle group all ready to go and assigned to a quick-select number. They would be able to react to basic situations (they would avoid getting flanked, and archers would be aware of whether they're in the back or the front, etc). The game Homeworld could've benefitted from this. It had the same problem that Age Of * suffers from. You have gobs and gobs of units running around like crazy fools with no organization. While you're trying to organize the fray, your base is suffering from neglect, etc. It's all too frustrating! |

#2: You may have a virus. I remember I had a couple computers once on which InstallShield just stopped working after awhile.
There were two problems: - One had a virus - The others had another problem. InstallShield writes tmp files during installation of every product. Over time, these tmp files pile up until it no longer works. daz - That functionality was introduced in Age of Kings... or conquerors expansion or something.
Worked great... I'd set up a line of Archers... place some cavalry in front of them, and priests behind them... with catapults and ballista to the side. Generally decimated any enemy coming at me. I don't like this Age of Mythology as much as Age of Kings. |

#5: That's cool, but can you auto-build a set battle group with one or two clicks? I think you have to build all the units and then AoK will allow you to group them better.
And #7, grouping units with a quick key isn't anywhere near the same as having a well formed, reactionary battle group that acts and reacts as one unit. The groups in AoE and AoK from my experience are just loose groups. Put them into battle and everything falls apart. They run under catapaults and get slaughtered by friendly fire, etc. Priests like to charge into battle and get slaughtered in the outset, etc. It's frustrating because I have to micromanage all these idiots while my town goes neglected which will deprive me of much-needed resources and reinforcements. My wrist grows tired quickly with all the rapid clicking necessary to maintain a moderate level of competition in this game. |

daz - yeah, you have to move the units together... then you can group them and change their offensive position.
They don't respond very intelligently, true... I really liked the game Homeworld, but it did have similar constraints. |
