Compaq breaks Palm's PDA grip | |

Thanks Rommel: Compaq has finally overtaken Palm as the Australian PDA market's top dog, taking advantage of a weak retail sector that has traditionally been Palm's home turf. According to researchers Inform, Compaq held 33.7 per cent of the total PDA market in October, compared to Palm's 33.4 per cent. Palm held just over 37 per cent of the market in September. Compaq also took the lead in terms of individual products, with the iPAQ 3870 taking top spot ahead of Palm's m515 in October. The Palm was followed by Compaq's iPAQ 3970 and 3850 models, with Toshiba's e310 rounding out the top five. | ||

| Anyone have any insight as to why Microsoft seems to be doing so much better in Australia, compared with the rest of the world? Not only are they leading in the PDA race (it appears from this article), but they are also absolutly creaming gamecube with their xbox (2:1 margin). |

Let me go ahead and steal sodajerk's thunder... that the reason is because "Steve Ballmer recently came to Australia and he strongarmed that whole continent".

| It is just a matter of time ...Pocket PC devices will be the dominant PDA out there, especially with the price dipping bellow $300. |

I have the Compaq 3835 (identical to the 3850, the 3870 only adds bluetooth, I think).

I don't know why Australia is buying more of them. I do remember how much crap the Palm people were giving the PocketPC back only two years ago, and how it would never survive.
Must suck to have to eat crow. Personally I find I have little use for a PDA. |

Austrailia sounds like a pretty nice place.
sodablue, I agree with your hesitation on using a PDA. I always thought Palms were less sophisticated than my ole' HP48sx calculator, but I've liked PocketPCs for a couple of years now, but never thought I could get $500 worth of use out of them. I ended up waiting until a few months ago, and bought a 3835 (same as TechLarry) for $204. And I'll tell you... my fears were right. I couldn't possibly get $500 use out of it... but I easily get $200. The Transcriber function is absolutely amazing AFTER the first couple of weeks. I used it religiously, and now it recognizing my handwriting at 95% of better. That is truly its Killer App. |

Nice to hear that some of you here are using Pocket PC Devices.
As for myself, I have the Compaq iPaq 3950, that I use for my GPS and Universal Remote Control (beats having a $1000 Pronto Remote), as for retreiving email and checking a few info on the Intertnet when I'm watching TV. As for watching, I use my iPaq to watch movies or listen to music when I fly. I copy my DVDs and watch it on the plane ...beats watching what ever the airline is offering. I also have my everyday Pocket PC ...which is the T-Mobile Pocket PC. I have important info, and of course I use it as my cell phone. I guess you can say that I utilize my Pocket PC devices to the extent. My Dell is on its way. Oh part of my job at work is to support PDAs ...yes that includes Palm. :( Mooresa ...so you like Transcribe. Have you tried a Tablet PC? =) |

mooresa56 - Yeah, actually I have an Aero 2130 that I upgraded to PocketPC 2000... I used it quite a bit when I first bought it, but I ended up falling back to a Franklin planner. Even though I don't use that religiously.
I don't know, maybe I'll take another look at them now. Get out my old PDA and see if I start using it. |

| rommels, i have tried the tabletpc for only a few minutes. I have no strong opinion on them yet. |
