Aiming to turn its upcoming Office 11 business productivity suite into an extensible platform for business applications, Microsoft Monday unveiled plans for a set of tools that will allow Visual Studio .NET developers to build business-specific applications based on Word and Excel documents. Dubbed Visual Studio Tools for Office, the technology will allow developers to design Word and Excel templates with an underlying customer-defined XML structure, based on corporate, departmental or industry-wide schemas. In this way, developers will be able to build document-based applications with context-specific help and supporting information. | ||

Bad move. When are they gonna learn that this will continue Office's reputation of security problems? I don't want my Word documents and Excel documents to run as applications... and if they can do that, then some moron out there is going to take the time to program them to format every hard drive on the planet. Office has no business processing machine/application code. If businesses need an application to do something, they should just buy Visual Studio.NET and write an application - you can whip them up in about five minutes with VS.NET.
They've been pushing this type of application development with Office in the past and all it gets them is security troubles. Outlook 2000/2002 is one of the most extensible applications ever written... and we all know how secure THAT is! Outlook is as secure is its users allow it to be. Many of the security issues are the result of users opening attachments and running code of unknown/untrusted orgin. Current versions of Outlook prohibit access to many attachment types by default, and is somewhat of an overreaction to cater to the ignorance of users. Certain scripts are also prohibited without user interaction.
The ability to use Office as an applications platform allows developers to leverage the power and tools available in the Office product without having to develop a solution from scratch. Even with VS.NET, there would still be a significantly greater amount of development time involved for certain apps than their would be if the developer could leverage what is already available. Concerning security and .NET, Office 11 will support application development using .NET (That's what the article is about), and future versions of Office will further extend this support. Anyone who uses "M$" in depicting Microsoft is a loser of such a grand scale it boggles the mind. Return to your fantasy open-source-land where there are little Linus elves dancing with faeries to the tunes played by magical cattarpillars with hooka pipes. I say it would be better for MS to enforce a Sandbox on the Documents. Although with the shift to the framework as being the scripting language for Office documents. (some in 0ffice 11, completed in Office 12) and the framework being the scripting langauge going forward replacing Windows Scripting Host. eventually. Those issues will go away or get extreamly more difficult to by pass. Personally I would like to see MS eats its own dog food and implement a Internet client and email program, built on top of the framework. One that can target many different fronts and is extensible. Finally be fully W3 standards complient. Implement XHTML 1 and perhaps XHTML moduliar. Better yet Implement MathML and other features or Allow for easy integration into the process stack to do so. Of course this is a pipe dream. As it appears that microsoft is starting to think about going to the half implemented MSN explorer as a primary front moving forward. Let's just hope they come to their senses and deliver a true XML platform in the next version of IE. Out side of that. Office in the development world will be no less or worse off then now. COM+ will be HIGHLY modified and hence WSH will be highly modified. I can forsee a day when untrusted code can't be ran or at least highly suspect to run, and then in a very tight Sandbox with no access to any part of the system. So yes I can see the end of Viruses or perhaps the evolution of very hightly evolved viruses in the near future. El |

I don't fully understand how CLR based scripting will work. Will it be a compiled .NET language? or interpretted script? |
