Musicians might recognize the name Ernie Ball as an icon credited with being an electric guitar industry pioneer. Ernie Ball Inc., the global manufacturer of guitar strings, electric guitars and basses, that bears his name, is now making a name for itself as a software industry pioneer. Over the past two years, Ernie Ball, the company, has moved its IT system almost entirely to open- source software, ditching older systems powered by Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system. It represents a growing class of small- and medium-sized businesses finding opportunity in alternative software such as the Linux operating system. | ||

I'm not sure about that. I think you need to compare apples to apples, and that's tough to do as hosting packages differ so radically. Disk Storage bandwidth usage Dynamic development support(i.e. PHP, ASP.NET, Coldfusion, etc.) Database support(Access, mySQL, SQL Server) Email accounts(# of, how they are managed, do they offer webmail access?) Control panels(How much control do you have without calling support desk?) Web hit statistics(do they offer webtrends or something like it, or do you parse your own log files?) Management(Do the servers use RAID-5? Do they do tape backups?) I've compared Windows and Linux hosting solutions in the past, and the Linux ones tend to be a bit cheaper, but they offer far less functionality. They might have more disk storage and bandwidth, but fewer email accounts and no ability to do database work. I use crystaltech.com and really I'm in love with them. I started with them about 3 years ago because they were highly recommended, and they must be doing something right as they are profitable and keep getting mentioned in the Netcraft web survey as a growing company. They've been continuously expanding their services, and in the past year their control panel has really increased in functionality due largely to the availability of ASP.NET. But choosing a web host package really depends on what you need. Some people just need bandwidth and static content. I wanted to do more. |
