Linux to replace Microsoft in German city offices | |

Linux software will replace programs made by Microsoft Corp. at government offices in Schwaebisch Hall as the German city seeks to save more than 100,000 euros ($99,255) a year. The city in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg wants to complete the software change on its 400 personal computers by the end of 2004, Schwaebisch Hall said on its Web site. Schwaebisch Hall is the first German city to stop using Microsoft programs as part of an agreement between Germany's Interior Minister Otto Schily and International Business Machines Corp., a distributor of Linux programs. IBM is pressing to bring the free Linux operating system into mainstream computing. | ||

1. how much is the switch over costing? 2. how much does employee retraining cost? 3. They should give a break down of the $99,255 expected savings? since linux is "free" shouldn't the potential savings be more? 4. And ofcourse IBM is doing this from the warmth of their heart. 5. Does this involve hardware changes or just software? 6. How will service and help desk cost? I am sure that those points have been made before |

Daphy, you sound like a socialist. And Microsoft is not that powerful. If they were, then what were the last few years under the U.S. DOJ's scrutiny, and all the money spent on court costs? No, companies like Sun griped because they couldn't compete with their inferior products, and servics. So they took it to the anti-christ to fix it. Mr. Slick Willy himself.
When this thing falls apart, and the workers quit because of software that isn't there yet, will you still be blaming Microsoft? Me thinks, yes you will. You have been brainwashed by the media, and anti-Microsoft concerns. The reason many states wanted to sue Microsoft in this country had to do with revenue for their coffers. If you have been reading U.S. news reports lately, many of our states are in trouble financially. So, they are looking everywhere they can, even to the point of becoming litigious. What a way to make a living. Only the attorneys make any money to speak of. Take care |

RichardJC is complaining about someone not using the features of Word correctly.
I've encountered it at my company as well, and it is annoying. The purpose of the grey form fields is for you to create a certain type of document that can be printed out correctly. Many people misuse the feature. |
