Legal Wars Have Changed Microsoft, CEO Says | |

Microsoft Corp. chief executive Steve Ballmer said yesterday that his company has "changed and grown" as a result of its lengthy antitrust battles and that it is "super-focused" on full compliance with terms of the settlement of its case with the Justice Department. In his first formal speech since a federal judge endorsed the agreement on Nov. 1, Ballmer told an audience at the Brookings Institution that Microsoft recognizes that it needs to be a more responsible partner with other companies and the government on key technology issues. | ||

"mhfm, no company should be forced to bow down to MS in order to prevent MS from taking away market share through bundling tactics. MS was wrong, the courts have decided and I doubt you are a judge, so stop fighting a lost battle."
Um, there was also a settlement which didn't have any problems with new features being bundled with Windows. The settlement which as been approved provides an easy to use for a user (or OEM) to select competitors products over Microsoft products. "If users want MS apps, let them download them through Windows Update, plain and simple." As a consumer I would not be happy if my Windows came devoid of Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, etc. I'm a consumer and I want them! |

Oh, I'm sure it has an affect on the software market. I'm just not convinced this isn't a good thing. I'm reminded of lights-on indicators in automobiles. In the 1970's and 80's my father would either build his own buzzer, or buy something at the auto-store and mount it in the cars he bought. It's about a $5 selection of parts, and takes maybe 30 minutes to figure out the wiring and install. Sometime beginning in around 1990 or so these began to become standard equipment on automobiles. I haven't seen a car yet today(from the lowest price Dodge Neon on up) that doesn't sound an alarm if you leave the lights on when you get out of the car. So an entire industry of add-on lights-on indicator buzzers was eliminated. One could make the same argument for FM stereos... used to be you bought cars with no radios and installed your own. You could make a similar argument for alarm systems... and so on, and so forth. The reason these were bundled into automobiles was not to reduce competition, but because the majority of customers demanded the functionality be there already. If you think consumers don't expect a web browser in the OS today you are either blind or nuts. Every OS ships with one... it's just expected functionality. |
