The Shared Source CLI 1.0 Release | |

The Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) is the ECMA standard that describes the core of the .NET Framework world. The Shared Source CLI is a compressed archive of the source code to a working implementation of the ECMA CLI and the ECMA C# language specification. This implementation builds and runs on Windows XP, the FreeBSD operating system, and Mac OS X 10.2. It is released under a shared source initiative. Please see the accompanying license. | ||

I thought you knew about the license, JWM. It's been that way for all of "Rotor"s betas as well.
K, you are now more confusing to me than before. You've never used an Apple. I assume that since Macintosh is owned by Apple, that means you've never used a Macintosh. This, of course, begs the question - if you've never used OS X why do you so consistantly praise it, say .NET should run on it, say Microsoft should buy it, or something along those lines. If you've never used it, coded for it, etc, why is it so good? If it is so good, why don't you buy one and use it? You don't make sense at all to me. |

So you haven't actually coded for OS X? You just assume that since you enjoyed coding for NeXT that you'd enjoy coding for OS X? I hope you assume correctly if you get your wish. Still though, when you say you'd like a .NET port for OS X, so you can write .NET apps on OS X, I'm a bit confused. Unless you are platform specific features using P/Invoke, there shouldn't be a difference in your target platform. If you don't like the UI of OS X too much, I can't see why coding to .NET on OS X would really matter.
As for the non commercial license, SSCLI is a product of Microsoft Research, which is an academic division of Microsoft. It wouldn't financially benefit Microsoft for folks to not pay for Windows or for the CLI on a non Windows platform for which Microsoft footed the development bill. If I want to write commercial .NET code for OS X or FreeBSD, it makes sense that I should pay the a fee to the company which wrote the .NET layer for me. If you write .NET code for Windows this is already paid, because it is included in the license fee for Windows. |
