Consumers need not lose in Microsoft's big win | |

By almost every sign, the court decision Friday upholding Microsoft's antitrust settlement with the Justice Department looks like a big win for the software giant. Microsoft officials who once feared a breakup of the company gloated about the favorable ruling. Critics griped that it lets the lawbreaking monopolist off too easy. Shareholders sent Microsoft stock up nearly 6% Monday. A one-sided victory for Microsoft would be bad news for consumers. As the evidence during nearly five years of litigation showed, Microsoft was perfectly willing to use its Windows operating-system monopoly to crush competitors. Now, the fear is that an unrestrained Microsoft will continue to starve consumers of a choice among new high-tech products and services coming onto the market. | ||

What company doesn't compete, and try to be number #1? I thought the idea of being in business was to make money for yourself, and your employees, etc... Not to play footsies with the competition? Since when did the USA become communist? This whole thing has been a blight on free enterprise. Sun is trying to use the US Court system to help its business, since they can't compete on the free market. Look at AMD, they are less than half the size of Intel, yet they are taking them on admirably. Learn a lesson Sun, and stop trying hiding behind the governments coat tails. You know what happens with those that play with the beast (government) too much? They get devoured. Now it is time to put this thing to rest, and go on about the business of life. We have more things to worry about than the rants and raves of loser companies like Sun, and AOL. |

There is more functionality in Windows XP Pro. It makes sense that you should pay for it. It is quite helpful to me to have a full fledged (albeit limited to one site) app server, web server, ftp server, smtp server. I'm a developer. It makes no sense at all for such functionality to be included in Windows XP Home Edition. My Mom doesn't need IIS, RDC, to join a domain, etc. I do. Having two versions (actually with MCE there are more than two) of Windows XP makes tons of sense to me.
As for high prices - consumers have the loudest voice in business. If you aren't satisfied with something a company does, you should write and tell them about it. Next you should put your money where your mouth is (or your lack of money) by refusing to purchase or support the company until it has made consessions to you. Moaning on a news site such as this doesn't count for informing the company. |
