Microsoft wins Round 1 in Netscape fight | |

Fresh from its victory in a four-year antitrust battle with the government, Microsoft won an early round yesterday in related private lawsuits by consumers and competitors, including Netscape Communications. A federal judge in Baltimore denied Netscape's request to hold Microsoft liable for damaging its Internet browser business. Netscape, a unit of AOL Time Warner, cited court findings in the government's antitrust case that the world's largest software maker illegally protected its Windows monopoly. | ||

| Since the Findings of Fact from the DOJ case have been admitted, it seems they lost round 1 but have won round 2. At any rate, at least Judge Motz isn't fully handing the case to Netscape on a silver platter. |

Netscape is great in Linux, but I have hated every version I have ever tried in Windows. And I have tried versions 2.x to 7.x Of course, Microsoft doesn't make IE/OE for Linux, so no competion their. <g> |

| I'd rather use Konquerer, which I detest, than Netscape on Linux. Perhaps NS 7 is better than the previous offerings. It's been almost two years (yipee!) since I had to use Linux. |

That is the way to go. Netscape died because it finally had some competition in that market. They had an 80% share when nobody else was writing "meaningful" browsers. If microsoft hadn't stepped in and built a better product then everybody would be using Opera instead of Netscape. "To collect damages, companies like Netscape and Sun "are going to have to show that their diminished profits and lost business were attributable to acts of Microsoft and not to their own mistakes and the shortcomings of their own products," said Andrew Gavil, an antitrust expert at Howard University law school's. " Its also going to be fun to watch Sun try and prove the above. Sun was actually profiting more before they got MS off of their side. Sun has created their own problems by not standardizing their product "Java" which I would hardly call it a product. It creates a minimal revenue stream by "promoting" their servers and OS. Their IDE has always been inferior to everyone elses (Yes I have used it) and that is really one of the easiest ways to make money off of a Technology. I think what has been decided has created a level playing field in a fair way. Part of leveling the playing field between you and your competitors is to produce as good if not better products and provide as good if not better services. They now have to work to try and beat MS at their own game which is to out research and develop them. I personally don't think that Sun is going to be able pull it off. The most notiable (though not a large) threat to MS is Linux but I don't think it is going to make a large dent in Microsoft's core businesses. The only product I see as a creditable foe to Microsoft at this point is Open Office. Which I have used and do like. Its almost their and I think it is going to hit MS where it hurts. |

After using Microsoft Office XP Pro for more than a year, OpenOffice.org (stupid name!) feels comparitively equivelant to WordPad. OO.o is years and billions of dollars behind in quality. It also doesn't offer a comparable product to Microsoft Access or Microsoft Outlook.
So far we've been talking about the Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook), but there are also several other Office apps - MapPoint, Publisher, FrontPage, Project, Visio, etc. The interoperability between the many Office apps (the core and the standalones) is a great strength to Microsoft Office over other offerings like Corel's WordPerfect Office or OO.o. |

So the trouble here is for Netscape to prove that version 4.x of Navigator was better than Internet Explorer.
That's going to be a hard uphill battle. |
