Now that the newly XML-enabled version of Microsoft Office, code-named "Office 11," is in its first official beta release, XML-J Industry Newsletter went straight to Tim Bray, co-inventor of eXtensible Markup Language, and asked for his exclusive views on this improvement in what Microsoft routinely-if immodestly-characterizes as "the world's leading suite of productivity software." | ||

Well, it's a huge step forward for everybody who wants to interop with Microsoft.
I'm not so sure it means a whole lot for Microsoft. |

RMD - Microsoft gains goodwill.
Not that it'll do anygood, because the ABM crowd will start whining about something new. :) |

Ultimately Microsoft will probably gain an even stronger foot-hold in the Office-type software market, which will create new markets for software and services that leverage the file formats. How about an MS Office built with ASP.NET and DHTML?!?
I don't think it will give direct competitors (OpenOffice, StarOffice, Corel, etc.) any more of an opportunity than they have already. i.e. having a standard "open" file format will not make those products any more attractive because MS will always be several steps ahead |
