Yipee! Anyone have any word on an MSN Messenger 5 version of Plus? Not all features that worked under Messenger 4.6 still work under v5.

#2 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 7:42:54 AM
Oh, I meant Messenger Plus by Pachou, not Plus! from Microsoft.

Not yet, but I'll sure be waiting for it!

On Windows XP, Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger run side by side. In other words, you can log in with two passports at the same time. You could even chat with yourself if you wanted to.

#5 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 8:37:50 AM
Logging in with two different passports can be quite useful. I have a business passport and a personal passport. I'm sure there are many people in a similar situation.

More advertising? There's no more advertising than there was in the previous version.

Ah, I was comparing to previous versions of MSN Messenger. You are correct when comparing to Windows Messenger.

As for Trillian, it is an option. It works for you, it doesn't work for me. I'm very happy using MSN Messenger 5 and Windows Messenger 4.6 on the same machine at the same time. You aren't happy with that, and you have a different option which makes you happy. I'm glad that Microsoft has given me this option.

I like the new feature that allows you to group your contacts and still have offline/online separated. Very impressive.

I too prefer to have two passports. One for work and one for personal.

This also allows you to have more than 150 contacts at one time. Essentially with both versions running, I can have up to 300. I currently have 175, so I am getting damn close to that 300 ;-)

#13, according to http://messenger.microsoft.com/, MSN Messenger 5.0 is also available for Windows XP. When I went to the site a few hours ago, it detected that I was running XP and recommended that I download v5. I guess that means the Messenger download site disagrees with that support guy.

#9 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 10:09:45 AM
Thanks for the info. I'm just saying that Microsoft intends MSN Messenger to be used on Windows XP. Go to http://messenger.microsoft.com/download/download.asp with Windows XP and see if it offers you a download option. It is intended to be used on Windows XP if those with XP want it.

#10 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 10:41:05 AM
I don't understand his response. Perhaps he is saying that if you don't want BOTH clients, then don't install MSN Messenger. MSN v5 will not replace Windows Messenger 4.x. It'll install in side by side mode.

#11 By 3384 (12.224.50.203) at 10/24/2002 11:11:02 AM
Good to hear that Windows Messenger will have a v5.0 too, since for the vast majority of people it's utterly silly to have two different clients with two slightly different feature sets, thereby tempting you to run both at once. MS should have simply used this opportunity to unite the product line into one, but failing that, at least they'll be on par.

Bonoriffic--I have the very same question... perhaps they are waiting until Greenwich in .NET Server?

However, this appears to be updated for XP SP1: http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/downloads/2000/imclient.asp

Anyone try it? I never installed it, but nevertheless my Windows/Exchange Messenger is working fine (on XP SP1)....

What the heck is Microsoft doing? Apparently they have too many “marketing” people with nothing better to do then confuse the public. I am getting really tired of Microsoft making more and more products which basically have no real functional difference other then to confuse the public. Why there can not be a single product called “Windows Messenger” that works on all operating systems is beyond me. If that product has additional features that only work on some operating systems, so be it. So apparently if you’re a WinXP user you have to decide whether you want to run the HOME, PROFESSIONAL or MEDIA version. All of which are very similar with another program or two thrown in. Then decide if you want to run Windows Messenger for WinXP or MSN Messenger for Windows (the WinXP version), or both. It will only get worse since they recently announced paid services with the MSN browser and Messaging Products. I wonder if this is what Mr. Balmer meant last month when he stated “yes we know some of our product lines are confusing to consumers and we are correcting this”. Right! Isn’t it great Microsoft went through all that trouble to get the operating system down to one code base to make it so easy on their customers (smile!)… Almost hard to imagine what the incentive is. One would think they could make more money keeping it simple, single operating system, single messenger product. Then if they feel they have a program of market value, stick it in a box and sell it. Don’t merge it into the operating system and sell another operating system alternative.

#14 By 7894 (66.167.136.146) at 10/24/2002 3:01:51 PM
Windows Messenger is not everyone else (smile!). You have to have WinXP to run Windows Messenger. MSN Messenger is for all other operating systems and maybe for WinXP also, read the above threads. Now overlap some paid services into all these messenger products and you have a mess as to what you can and can not use. The operating system, msn subscriber, messenger service subscriber, could all be variables. Thus if you are a paid MSN member will your Windows Messenger (XP) or MSN Messenger (other OS's) look any different. I don't think we know, but it is confusing to me. We haven't even talked about messaging built into Internet Explorer, MSN7, MSN8, etc... Way to many interfaces and options IMO.

#15 By 3384 (12.224.50.203) at 10/24/2002 4:13:24 PM
Trade Wind, if MSN Messenger is supposed to be the "consumer" version, then how can it be explained that XP Home comes with Windows Messenger -- and according to MS -- MSN Messenger is not a proper upgrade path for XP (Home or otherwise)? Since XP has a "business" as well as "home" version, and Windows Messenger is in both, we can't let MS say that one messenger is for one market and the other messenger is for the other. It's impossible. I think the most that can be said is that MSN Messenger is for all non-XP users; not that it makes any obvious sense for MS to perpetuate such a thing.

#16 By 3653 (63.162.177.140) at 10/24/2002 5:10:08 PM
Good point Trade Wind. Not confusing to me. I'm loving it.

I am VERY impressed with the absolute FLURRY of MSN-related activity. They have sustained it for 2 weeks already. In the mean-time, I've barely noticed anything new in AOL land. This has to be one of the most impressive product version launches out of MSFT in a long time.

#17 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 7:38:56 PM
I don't understand what the big deal is. People cry when the have options, people cry when they don't have options. Since you don't have to pay for either client, nor do you have to install v5, why complain? I just don't get it.

#18 By 7894 (66.167.136.146) at 10/24/2002 8:02:17 PM
Your right maybe it isn't a big deal. But for those who work with setting up software for large user bases having lots of unnecessary options that really are not necessary do cause a huge amount of extra work. It is hard to explain the confusion of having Windows Messenger product and a MSN Messenger product creates unless you have been in a support situation. Lots and lots of questions. Which features in which products support NAT, which work with what routers, can I install MSN Messenger on XP, which features in each support UPnP, etc. etc. Since Microsoft doesn't tell us what changes are made in each revision the answers to these require lots and lots of trial by error.

#19 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/25/2002 2:27:52 AM
It still don't see the big deal. Changes in each revision is a really separate issue from having a Windows Messenger AND an MSN Messenger.

I can't see the difference between having a fork in the Messenger path, and different versions of the client. How 'bout in general the differing IM clients from different vendors? Do we get up in arms about AIM and MSN Messenger both existing? No. Who cares if the same company makes two clients? It really isn't a big deal.
