When it comes to battling video piracy, Microsoft Corp. can't seem to find a happy medium. The company drew catcalls from reviewers recently with a new version of its operating system, dubbed Windows XP Media Center edition. The software was designed to enable consumers with specially equipped computers to make digital recordings of TV shows, but it automatically slapped all recordings with electronic locks. | ||

But in the MPAA's view, Microsoft is giving them a problem. To the studios, "copy never" doesn't mean "store for an unlimited time on a hard drive" -- particularly not when the program is a pay-per-view movie that's not supposed to be recordable.
Hmm, it seems that this would fall under fair use. I'm sure it could be argued, as it was in the betamax case, that for time displacement reasons, copying the material should be legal. Perhaps, the copy on the hard drive should be marked play once. or something along those lines. |

| ComputerExpert, is that any better than renting a DVD and copying it on VHS? If not, then whats the big deal? |

| Maybe I am wrong but when you get a pay-per-view movie don't you have to start it and watch it without interruptions? Personally I prefer to rent a DVD and watch it whenever I want, even twice if I liked it. |

Another example of MPAA stupidity:
"We have high-value content that has rights associated with it, and we would like devices to respect the rights associated with those CGMS bits," Hunt said. Windows Media PCs do respect the CGMS bits. People still complain about this support. By the way, has the MPAA totally forgotten about VCRs? Heck, I can record a TV show with a $30 TV tuner card. |
