The rift between Lindows.com and Microsoft got a little wider Tuesday as Lindows CEO and MP3.com founder Michael Robertson defended his company's business model. In his weekly newsletter, Robertson issued an open letter to Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer blasting the software giant's criticism of a $199 computer built by Microtel bundled with Lindows and sold on Wal-Mart.com. | ||

Well, I don't understand why people equate the execution of an aggressive corporate strategy with theft and deception...for gosh sakes, Lindows is a clone of an OS - Both of Windows and UNIX features (more so Windows) and is playing catch-up (this is also quote from Steve Ballmer from a recent interview).
Regarding this article, it's very shady in the numbers...an OEM Windows XP license costs approx 50 bucks. Answer me this: How does he equate that with $1,000 worth of MS software? How are there not 100,000 applications available for download for windows (granted not on MS site, but Lindows did not write those applications either)? Why is the price for XP 189 - 399, it's $99 to upgrade and OEM license that comes with your computer? Even if you want to include an application bundle, in comparison, MS Works is a much better comparison...I mean office really has a lot more features than a typical home user needs, and together WITH XP probably costs only $80 OEM (since we are talking about buying a new computer w/Lindows)? Richteralan - I totally agree.
My only beef with Lindows is their name choice. Otherwise all they are really doing is bringing reality to the "Linux movement", that is... users will start equating Linux with well... |

| I agree with you, blue. The trademark infringement is my only issue with them. I don't think the company is going to make it, and I do not have a high opinion of the CEO, but that aside... let the market decide. |

urmmm...by chance did anyone look at the spec's on this 'puter from Walmart?
Via 800MHz processor (which means an older Via chipset motherboard) 10GB Hard Drive @ 5400 RPM 128mb SDRam Integrated video and audio 1 (ONE!!!!) available PCI slot OS wars aside...I have one word to describe this computer - YUGO (if you never heard of Yugo, it was a tin can of a car from Yugoslovia - more dangerous than a Ford Pinto!)
