Squeezing out another MS Operating System
Well Microsoft isn't know for making stable computer operating system. Let face
it, they've been trying since the 80s to come up with something decent and since
then have come up with 10 versions and 10 official variants. Below is a list of
the DOS type versions:
- Windows V1
- Windows V2
- Windows V2.11 - Really there was one!
- Windows V3/ V3.1/ V3.11
- Windows 95 A/B/C
- Windows 98/ 98 Gold Edition/ 98 Second Edition
- Windows ME
Below is a list of the NT type versions:
- Windows NT 3.5/ 3.51
- Windows NT 4
- Windows NT 5 (2000)
- Windows NT 5.1 (XP)
The Basic Background
While most people won't remember the DOS type Windows V1 and V2, most would
have come across a version of mark 3 point something. Basically this and the one
before weren't a combined OS as it required a version of DOS (Disk Operating
System) to be installed before the main Windows part could be installed. Version
3 had a program manager for controlling the programs and had limited
multitasking capabilities.
Next came the first of the NT series, which I would like to comment on but
never used. After the first of the NT series came the first combined DOS and
Windows operating system, hailed as the best thing since sliced bread, and
calling itself Windows 95. Well it was released it in 95. This as mention had
DOS combined with it and was automatically installed along with Windows. This
DOS version was number 7.00 (This change slightly with each variant of 95). As
for the interface, the program manager become the task bar, the program grouping
became the start menu and two new main features were introduced, the desktop and
finally the right click. This gave the ability of doing more quickly as well as
having a nicer looking, and more manageable Windows environment. Next Windows
NT4, based itself on the 95 look and added better support and better hardware
support. But still not great hardware support. This came later!
Other than an enhanced look, not much else come in to the public view other
than and 2 updated interfaces (Compare 98s interface to ME or 2000) and better
hardware handling. Whoopee!
The Money Making Game
Well not to criticise Microsoft too much but they have made a great computer
operating system and plenty of tries along the way with plenty of bucks to show
for it. With each new operating since 95, it was basically, an updated interface
with and updated hardware support. Windows 98 was the OS that was never meant to
crash too, but it did, and it crashed to the embarrassment of Microsoft when
they were displaying it to the public for the first time. The Gold edition was meant
to be the same old 98 that was release but with fixes and then second edition
(SE for short), with the inclusion of Direct X6 and IE 5.0. This was the same
with ME, but not quite. The first day I got this I found a bug in it. It had
something to do with it setting itself. The first bit of the installation went
fine, but when it restart, the setup kept look for a cabinet file. This was
because it was looking for it of a CD drive that became inactive once the set-up
program restart, but the CD dos driver wasn't. Some much for better hardware
handling this time. Anyway, once I got it too install it was basically more
stable on the same machine than 98SE was, although some would disagree. ME was
basically another version of 98 but instead it was called ME because of the year
and to get people into thinking it was another completely new OS. Does anyone
remember when people were saying you could get from a 95 system with all the
features of 98 if you install Internet Explorer 4 desktop update. I r
