Why Microsoft caved in on copy protection | |

What does Microsoft have in common with Britney Spears? Not much, except both can sing a song called, "Oops!... I did it again." In Microsoft's case, that means the company screwed up--again--on a consumer-rights issue. And now it's retreated--again. You would have thought that the Redmondians would have learned their lesson after Hailstorm (aka My Services) crashed and burned. As you may recall, that initiative was supposed to facilitate e-commerce and Web applications. But we haven't heard much about Hailstorm ever since people found out it would require them to hand over all their personal information (such as passwords and credit card numbers) to Microsoft for (supposedly) safe storage. | ||

Oh, James, what on earth are you talking about? The only portion of "Hailstorm" that made it to the market was .NET alerts. I guess you could say that Passport made it too, but Passport had been around for years before "Hailstorm" was announced at PDC 2000. Messenger might provide a nifty interface for consuming web services, but clearly it is not consuming "Hailstorm" services, since there aren't any "Hailstorm" services to be consumed.
As for your SDK, which SDK are you talking about? The .NET My Services SDK? First of all that is a beta SDK. Second of all, you having the SDK doesn't much matter, since Microsoft doesn't have any servers running "Hailstorm" services. In this case, ZDNet did a pretty accurate job of reporting. I disagree with the anti-DRM jargon, but the information in the article was accurate as far as I can tell. |

What really pisses me off is that "journalists" such as this make infrinces that have absolutely know bases on FACTS.
Microsoft never said you would have to give up your passwords, credit card numbers, etc... it was merely a service that you COULD take advantage of IF you subscribed to .NET My Services. .NET My Services was going to be quite a bit more than just those few things... but I suppose when you have idiots who the right to freedom of speech, then you get a bunch of BS. |

Dave Coursey has been bashing MS a lot lately. Keep in mind he wrote an article about how he couldn't even find a place to put his XP MediaCenter PC.
If anyone knows Dave personally, tell him I'll be happy to take that MediaCenter PC off his hands. I have the perfect place to put it. :-) |
