SPH,
He can blame businesses (or corps) that didn't want new features to be in Service Packs (like in the NT days)
But on that front, basically except for the new hardware support.
Win 95 to win 98se is the same OS. Just minor updates changeing the shell from propietery to IE based.
I do agree that 2k to xp should only be a 50 dollar upgrade at most.
Beyond that,
I am still trying to find out why DVD playback is only offered in the XP version and not the rest of the OSes, (from what little I have heard, it is more related to the trials than the technical reasons, and directly related to businesses not wanting new features in SP's)
Win 9x is another issue altogether.
I do see the push and pull of Consumer and Business needs in the OSes now that the core base has been merged into one OS.
MS should come publically and release a Policy for hardware support. and what the cut off dates are.
One thing that will be nice, if we ever move to EFI, hardware vendors will have more control of what is supported or not. Since the OS can be an EFI OS and can read from the EFI hardware drivers. While software may have to be updated to give full OS support. the basic functionality can be there for 3rd party vendors to use in the interim.
Read devices like bluetooth, USB, firewire etc. could all have had support well before MS decided to put it in the OS.
But from the 2k front to XP. XP is such a Minor update that MS should reward its early adoptors with a lower upgrade cost.
