Dell to pitch $199 Pocket PC at Comdex | |

Dell Computer is planning to unveil two handhelds--one priced at $199--based on Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 operating system this fall, according to sources. Both handhelds are expected to be put on display at the Comdex Fall 2002 tradeshow in November, sources said. One handheld, which will incorporate a 300MHz Intel XScale processor, will sell for $199. The other handheld will include a 400MHz Intel XScale processor and sell for $299. | ||

| If it is upgradeable, this will be GREAT, as PocketPC 2002 is tuned to the older ARM chips, and not XScale, however, XScale has features that will speed up a lot of things when the OS is made to take advantage of them. |

and Palm's last differentiator (price) fades away... and with it fades Palm itself.
I just hope Sony jumps into the PocketPC camp. I know its a long shot, but I really like their hardware... but no hardware is good enough to make me withstand that horrible PalmOS. |

Toshiba e310's have been selling for $249 recently (either refurb with free shipping from TechDepot, or brand new with a pair of rebates from Amazon). Both offers have run out, but brand new @migo's have been going for about $200 since UR There filed for bankruptcy.
So $199 for a Pocket PC 2002 based PDA is not a huge breakthrough, especially if it won't ship until the end of the year. Dell's service and support are the key advantages, and they have designed a nice looking case with dual lights (all other PPCs have a single light which blinks for reminders, and in some cases to indicate battery status). I assume Dell will ship with EUU2 (meaning essentially Service Pack 2 for Pocket PC 2002, except the WinCE group doesn't like the term "Service Pack") in ROM, since it released over a month ago. It's just a shame that Dell couldn't go ahead with Windows CE .NET. The code for 4.1 is gold, but there seems to be a feeling that no manufacturers will ship devices until 4.2. |

| #6 ...this is a huge price break considering that the system will have a 64MB and 400 Mhz processor. The e310 and UR There are only running 32 MB of RAM and 206 Mhz processor for $249 after rebates. |

Dude, I'm getting another dell, but this one will be smaller, lighter, cooler, and it will have the same speed (MHZ) processor of the first dell I bought(scary isn't it)!
I am really excited about this, because I've wanted a pocket pc, but haven't found one that I've liked, or could afford. Now, I just want to see a really cool tablet pc from dell, and then I'll grab one of their printer's! Just think, pocket pc(sweet), tablet pc(wow!), blue-tooth printer(exciting!) I know I sound like a marketing person, but how cool would it be to integrate all three devices and to be able to do it at a reasonable price! |
