Suspicion over Microsoft gift to poor schools | |

Advocates of free computer software have expressed concern that Microsoft is engaged in tactics in poor countries that will help it further entrench its dominant position in the industry. As free alternatives to proprietary software gain credibility, Microsoft is preparing to give away its products to schools across the developing world. This comes as education authorities in poorer countries are turning to the free Linux operating system because they are unable or unwilling to pay for licences to use software from Microsoft and other commercial vendors. | ||

<sarcasm> Thats not fair Microsoft can't give software for free. I mean software for free? Thats ridiculous! </sarcasm> What is the matter GPL nazis? Worried your only selling point isn't good enough? The only reason you hear about Open Source software (not necessarily bad) and GPL software is that the cost is supposedly free (only if your time is worth nothing). I guarantee you no one would be considering this software if the economy wasn't doing so poorly. |

MS is truly evil!
Giving away free softare, that is insidious. Why don't they just buy Apple computers for the schools? Or help Sun distribute, install and do tech support for Star Office? Or to be truly fair don't give to charity. Another case of MS being darmed if they do and darmed if they don't. |

This is the weirdest article. Wasn't it just a few weeks ago Sun announced giving away StarOffice to schools? I asked pointedly why this wasn't evil, and the anti-MS whiners claimed that nobody said it was when MS did it. Now we have this article proving I was right. |

But in your scenario, the people that use Macs used them in training for a specific job field. That's different than saying, "If schoolchildren learn a certain system, the thinking goes, they will want to continue using it in adult life."
The guys in your scenario were already adults, and Macs were training tools for their industry. They could use PCs for the same jobs, but things like the music industry is one of the main places that Apple has remained entrenched, mainly due to the propaganda that the Mac is better than the PC in those industries. |
