Sun moves in on Microsoft monopoly in schools | |

Sun Microsystems Malaysia Sdn Bhd has given away half a billion ringgit worth of software to thousands of schools, colleges and universities in the country, which would save the Government a substantial amount. The company donated RM475mil (US$125mil) worth of its StarOffice 6.0 suite of applications to the Education Ministry. Its minister Tan Sri Musa Mohamad said that the ministry was currently paying a “handsome amount” to Microsoft Corp for licences. He declined to specify the amount but said that it cost the ministry “hundreds per computer program.” | ||

When did Microsoft get a "monopoly in schools"? I thought that was Apple. :)
parker- you are so right. $0 is $0( Unless Sun has a plan to increase the price later. Get them hooked then charge them for it) |

| Weren't all previous versions of StarOffice free? I think Sun started charging for it, so that could continue to give it away for free to non profit, academic groups and take the tax write off. I don't see anyone waiting in line to pay money for StarOffice. |

| Exactly right BobSmith. Sun isn't giving anything away for free. They are simply creating a nice tax writeoff. |

| IE, WMP, Outlook Express, Messenger, etc. are all inovations to the operating system. They help drive the sales of Windows. Windows makes money, so these products are not free. |
