A new build of ICQ 2002a has been released. This build takes the messaging service up to release 3729. But for those of us who don't want all of the rubbish that comes with this larger release of ICQ, can download ICQ Lite instead.

Spam city!
the only thing that ICQ is good for getting automated "users" saying something like
"hi, I am a college student. Me and my rooms have left our camera on, please come and watch".
When I use to use ICQ (way back when) I would get flooded with this and similar type message.
ICQ is a piece of crap that has out lived it usefulness. I have read something about blocking the ports back to the server inorder to stop those messages but why even bother? Nothing beats MSN messenger.

Set ICQ to only accept messages from users on your Contact List and you get no spam!

ICQ is a silly little app. Windows/MSN Messenger is a much more polished and professional IM client.

Datcho, use MSN or Windows Messenger and block all but those on your contact list. I've never once received a spam IM on Messenger and I've used it since 1.0 in August of 1999.

Forgot to say that the "official" ICQ download is still 3728.
btw, can't we edit our earlier posts here?

In my eyes, ICQ is a "bloated..spam magnet" piece of doggy doo!
Windows/MSN Messenger is the smallest, quickest, free Messenger on the market. I too have been using MSN Messenger since 1.0.

#11 which is why there was a suggestion for the much smaller ICQ Lite, doh!
When it comes to features, nothing beats ICQ.
Windows/MSN Messenger in some respects is too limited to compete with ICQ (can't receive/send messages when invisible, no SMS, etc). It also frequently disconnects, on several machines with differing ways of connecting. It also has a nasty habit of appearing when starting Outlook Express (why!?!?)
Yahoo! Messenger is better, but still not as close.
On all messengers, you can just accept users on contact list so saying that one is worse for spam is bollocks.
That said, I use all 3 at same time. So who cares? It's what you prefer that matters, not which is better.

#12 Testman,
1. I am well aware of ICQ lite, which is STILL bigger than MSN/Windows Messenger
2. Features add bloat. MOST people don't want the features of ICQ. MSN Messenger is the largest stand alone Messenger in use today. It's clean and easy to use.
3. I have NEVER had a disconnect using Messenger, except for when I get a maintanence warning from Microsoft. This is running on 40+ machines on our local network as well as all of my friends and family..they don't get disconnected.
4. Ability to send/receive when "Appearing Offline" would be nice.
5. Yahoo! Messenger is the Messenger that disconnects all the time. I have talked to many people in the Yahoo! Lobby chatrooms that experience that same problem.
6. I was able to disconnect the Messenger from Outlook Express.
7. When I had ICQ, I had allowed ONLY messages from my contacts on my list and I still received spam.
MSN/Windows Messenger is the first with Alerts. It also has a superior pop up notification system when showing who has signed on, Alerts, new Emails received. It also has full desktop application sharing and control so you can access other Windows system via Messenger.
ICQ is old, bloated and outdated. Yahoo! Messenger has potential, and AIM is now a complete AD with version 5.0.

Datcho and athlonrulz, I have checked my copy of ICQ's permissions and it is set so all Events can only be from people on my Contact List plus don't accept Multi Recipient messages from users not on the Contact List and don't accept World Wide Pager or EmailExpress messages.
My Authorisation is required before users add me to their Contact List, unclick Allow others to view my Online/Offline status from the web. I've only ever had ICQ spam when I was using ICQ98 and that was most likely because I did not set the permissions.
I like Windows Messenger over the full version of ICQ as I don't use any of the extra ICQ features anyway (webcam support would be nice), I'm giving ICQ Lite a go for now. Also I've found Windows Messenger works better via NAT routers (file transfer etc). If only you could send messages from one IM to another!!!

#16 Brian_MS_MVP please tell us how to disconnect MSN messenger from OE.
I termserv to my home PC to check my mail using OE (I don't want to check my mail at work) but when ever I do OE starts MSN messenger thus logging me out from my current connection at work.

FYI: 3729 has been pulled. If you download it today (as opposed to yesterday), you'll get 3728. Yes, from the very same ftp.icq.com.
Question: For anyone who has used ICQ Lite, does it allow you to use your History from ICQ? The History database in ICQ is one of the things that separates it from all the pretenders, which so far (that I've seen) only use primitive text files if they have a history function at all.

I'm having major problems with Messenger disconnecting. It shows itself as if I'm signed in, but I don't receive any notifications and other users see me as offline.
I am behind a router and this happens at least once a day. For now, my only solution is to periodically sign off and then sign back on again.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to deal with this problem?

rseiler re: ICQ Lites History.
ICQ Lite only has basic text files for keeping a record of your messages.
