ePeriodicals: Microsoft's Killer App for Tablet PC? | |

Microsoft Corp. thinks it's found a killer app for its Tablet PC: as a home for a new breed of electronic magazines. The software giant is prepping an end-to-end electronic publishing solution, known as ePeriodicals, which it will introduce at its Tablet PC launch in New York City on Nov. 7, according to sources. The technology is being developed by Microsoft's eMerging Technologies unit, which is part of the company's Productivity and Business Services Group headed by Group Vice President Jeff Raikes. ePeriodicals comes out of the advanced reading team, the unit that has championed Microsoft's ClearType online-font technology and the eBook Reader products. | ||

Oh, come on! I could buy 150 paper magazines, share them without breaking any federal laws with friends, wipe my ass with them, use them as an umbrella in the rain, and still save money by not buying a tabletPC.
Microsoft's eBook format has been a failure. ClearType is the most whacked, frankenstein bit of technology I've ever tried to fathom... Is it an internet service? An authentication, security measure? A font technology? Why the hell is a font technology tied to an internet connection? Didn't Apple save Wintel from TrueType and Adobe years ago with OpenType? Why would this ridiculous glue (read: embrace and extend with no user benefit) succeed when non-proprietary font and e-document standards exist? I'll take the baseline PDF format over a MicrosoftClearTypeePeriodical any day. Killer app My ASS!! |

stu, I wasn't suggesting ClearType is equivalent with PDF. And I can read.
The problem is why does a font smoothing tech require an internet connection? Why did they build internet authentication into a font smoothing tech? Why must user settings for font smoothing be set over the internet? Can you explain any of that to me? MS's own marketing bullsh1t is great and all, but these 4 or so pages completely ignore the fact that this "font smoothing tech" is tied to 3 or 4 other efforts without a single logical connection. I'm aware that Adobe has CoolType and that it's a part of pdf... my point being I'd prefer a well-rendered PDF (even of the generic, non-Adobe proprietary format) over a Microsoft ePub w/ClearType. jerk, cool it on the cursing a bit. It doesn't help your argument at all.
As for the ePeriodicals idea, good luck to them. Sounds like an innovative idea that should be made or killed in the marketplace. I'm just glad MS has the willingness to push the envelope consistently. Of course, its just a matter of time before .mac allows e-subscriptions to all the AOLTW media properties. And maybe they'll even let people read the magazines on the iPod. LOL at that visual image. |

mooresa, how does a curse hurt my argument. Only pathetic little pusses give a sh1t about the connotation of a word. Toughen up, really, they're words, they won't hurt you.
And a sh1t here, fck there doesn't change my argument. You just can't tolerate a point from sodajerk without providing some commentary. I prefer commentary on Microsoft/Windows.. if you want to provide some sub-, meta-commentary, can't you pick something better than my style? And, boy, you really don't get Apple, do you? You don't believe Steve when he says the PDA is essentially useless and will be replaced by phones? Well, guess what, Apple would never say, "We have now figured out a rationalization for why everyone needs to go out and buy a $1000 tablet--this is it, it's a killer, the latest killer app--it's a freakin' magazine!" Jeez, can you concede that eMags wouldn't justify a Tablet for anyone? That paper is actually an advacned technology that is much better at many things? Someone reminded me the other day of when Bill G. was on Letterman, and he futsed around with and struggled to get going, and tried to explain a stream of audio of a baseball game. When it started up, Bill was all a twitter... Dave looked at him deadpan and said, "Have you ever heard of the radio, Bill?" (Just a bit of humor, don't find it demonstrative of my point whatsoever.) | Besides, what better word is there for the MS typography pages? there is no other than bullsh1t! How often do you see anyone using ClearType? What has MS contributed to typography that isn't surpassed with the most cursory examination of others' contributions? etc, etc, etc. |

| ClearType doesn't require an internet connection. If you check around, you should find an app or two allowing you to adjust the settings without going to MS' site. And from what I've seen of other SPAA font rendering technologies, ClearType is better. Certainly better than CoolType. |

Jerk, you might be taken a bit more seriously, if you would give MS even a hint of credit on even the smallest thing. But you have NEVER given them anything but grief... showing your bias is strong and your mind is closed. I just hope Mrs. SodaJerk (or Mr. SodaJerk, if appropriate) doesn't have to listen to that pottymouth. And on the topic of ClearType, I'm using right this second. Hmmm... I guess I'm all alone though. |

| I agree that this is no killer app. I don't agree with most of the rest of the jerk's comments. I really have no idea what he means by cleartype requires the internet, that cleartype is an authentication system, that cleartype is a security measure. ClearTYpe is a subpixel font display technology. No more. No less. |

| jerk, if I'm not mistaken Microsoft is the first to produce and subpixel display technology - ClearType. That is a contribution. As far as who uses it? Um, millions of users of Windows XP use it. |
