Acknowledging “too many vulnerabilities in the product,” Microsoft Corp. vice president Mike Nash said software must achieve “the same level of trust as a public utility” that supplies 120 volts reliably from every electrical outlet. Nash heads the security business unit that early this year enforced a 10-week stand-down of all development at Microsoft while 11,0000 coders learned about threat modeling and peer-reviewed each other’s work. | ||

A little lesson for those who don't live in CALI: the public utilities weren't the ones who F***ED (sorry virgin-ears but that's the only word for it) the state--it was the outside energy traders, pipelines, etc... There was also no energy shortage... there was plenty of energy, people simply couldn't afford the prices. It was a shortage of affordable energy.
That being said, I don't want MS to be like a public utility unless they allow an independent public utilities commission to rule their practices, decisions. (Soda, please watch the swearing. 5 responses before mine, and only 1 had a clue! Realist gets the prize. The rest of you are far too set on picking apart Mr. Nash's comments... and totally miss his POINT.
Calm down. Read the story and enjoy life for a change. Not every single MS comment has to be debated, picked apart, torn to shreds, proven incorrect, or otherwise disparaged. CHILL! |

| mooresa, the most relevent point is that a "public" utility is a gov't controlled, gov't reguated enterprise even if it is provided by a private company. Those "private" utilities ar generally monopolies and get broken up to represent regional needs. They are then set in competition with other "utilities" if they are private. So I'm fully aware of what the idiotic point was, he could have used the metaphor that MS wants to be as reliable as the Sun coming up if he wanted to, instead he used a metaphor that a lot of antitrust advocates were using. If MS wants to be the only desktop, Office Suite provider they should be responsible to the public and the government, not to shareholders. |
