Amazon.Com, one of the first and best internet American e-stores, has just started to take pre-orders for the highly anticipated new operating system coming from Redmond. The upgrade version of Microsoft Windows XP Professional, set to be released on October 25th, is actually priced at $199.99. I wouldn't have a problem with WPA if I felt I was getting something for my extra pain.
Seeing as how it supposedly reduces the amount of piracy, this would seem to indicate increased volume of sales to Microsoft would be possible. It would be even more possible if Microsoft dropped their prices in half, $50 for the upgrade to Home and $100 for the upgrade to Professional. Whether or not it is part of the EULA or technically legal, or whatever. I know many people who have at least 2 computers in their home, sometimes many more. In many of these cases the extra computers are for experimentation. Microsoft over the past several years has taken an attitude that those of us who experiment or learn with their products should just be lucky to do so. They apparently do not understand that we bring in business for their company. The recent moves of less freebies at conferences, less benefits from being certified, etc. all point to this unfortunate attitude. I am not certain yet if I will buy Windows XP. I may buy one copy, but it's unlikely I will buy 4 as they intend me to. It will be interesting tomorrow to see what happens with Office XP as I am going to replace the motherboard in my main system and reinstall everything. I'll see just how much of a pain this will be. |

Hey #10 Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa Boo Hoo. My smallest violin in the world is playing "My heart bleeds for you." In case you have never taken a Computer Science course let me learn you a little. Its a well known fact that in the software development cycle most of your resources are devoted to the maintenance stage. Every single piece of software ever made has bugs. And Microsoft is no exception, its just the nature of the beast(no pun intended). As to your argument that you need more resources to run all of the bells and whistles of XP you are correct. But I put this question to you, in 20 years would you have the same OS with no new features? Why not take advantage of the new hardware available? What you propose is stagnation and cessation of all new innovations and that is the path of the dinosaurs. I am quite tired of responding to these obviously retarded comments. I mean what good does it do? I am not going to change your mind. And you certainly aren't going to change mine, so where does that leave us? What purpose does it serve other than to make everyone look silly?

Hey #14, you make it sound like working for Billy is a bad thing. I would love to work for MS and as soon as I get out of college I am going to try and work there. I truly believe they make the best software on the planet. And yes they have made mistakes. No one is perfect. Why hold someone to an impossible standard?
