Microsoft CTO Sees 'Dramatic' Period Of Advancements
Time: 05:12 EST/10:12 GMT | News Source: InformationWeek | Posted By: Alex Harris

In Microsoft's vision of the future, broader acceptance of powerful handheld devices will lead to a steady flow of useful information to consumers no matter where they are. Microsoft Corp.'s chief technology officer, Craig Mundie, predicts a period of dramatic innovation for the computer industry after more than a year of relatively staid performance.

In a meeting Thursday with reporters and editors from The Associated Press, Mundie hailed agreements by technology companies on a common Internet programming language, along with the increasing popularity of powerful handheld computers and other "intelligent devices." These range from automotive computers to a new tablet-style computer that students and others can use for handwritten notes and research. "We're right at the cusp," said Mundie, Microsoft's senior vice president for advanced strategies and policies. "You're at the beginning of potentially another major upturn."

I hope he's right. I'd like to see some more spending in the tech sector.

nomdlev, your comments seems indictate this is only a MS vision. Clearly 24/7 anywhere anytime connectivity is where the market is going. Cars with GPS, Watches with net link, refrigerators that automatically order food.

If anyone but MS provides software to facililate these services it's all? You guys amaze me, if MS does something is bad, if Apple or Sun does it then it's great for consumers.

Well, according to nom's view of FUD, I mean life, Apple already is everywhere and on every device. Funny, I don't think I've seen a single one of those devices with Apple in it or on it, despite my experience with the IT departments of a some rather large companies.

Dell running Windows and IBM AS/400's are what I've seen.

#4 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 10:07:57 AM
The iPaq already is an all purpose PDA. What did I need an iPod for again?

Funny, I order things from Microsoft all the time. I always get the on time, exactly what I order. I've never seen anything from Apple worth ordering, so I can't speak from personal experience about their delivery practices. I can say one thing, though. Apple isn't now and has never really been a software company. They couldn't even do the OS right, so they leached off of BSD and have even open sourced some of it. Microsoft has always been a software company and has fullfilled the software needs of countless hundreds of millions of customers. : - )

Sorry, if you want to mock Sun, I won't stand in your way. My network is more than one computer. None of my computers come from Sun!

As for Apple's leach of BSD. Did BSD have a majority market share in the UNIX world? If not, why didn't Apple go after the Unix market leader? That would have been a better business move. Further, since BSD never did make inroads to the desktop market, the wiser thing to do, would have been for Apple to license the Windows source code from Microsoft and produced a port for the Motorola CPUs which Apple loves so much.

Apple never has in its history "one upped" Microsoft. If it had it would likely be a tad bit bigger than 2% of Microsoft's size. Millions to switching to OS X. Lol! There aren't even that many users on OS X. If indeed millions of Windows users have switched to OS X, that means that not a single Mac user has switched from OS 9!

If Apple controlled your fridge, if you ordered bologna Steve Jobs would decide that wasn't really what you wanted and he'd send you Goat Cheese instead, packaged in a nice lavendar wrap to make it look pretty. Then charge twice as much because the lavendar wrap that differentiated their goat cheese from others.

#7 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 10:31:21 AM
He'd probably offer you an upgrade from lavendar wrapped Goat Cheese to a nice teal wrapping on Gouda. You'd of course have to pay for that. Several days later, he'd finally offer you the item you originally ordered in a plain paper bag and have you pay full price yet again.

Can't believe I didn't think of that, blue.

#8 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 9/23/2002 11:05:43 AM
nomdlev - Which is all well and good except I still don't have my bologna.

At least with Microsoft I get what I ordered.

#9 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 11:14:29 AM
Wasn't "My bologna" a spoof by Wierd Al on "My Sharona"?

Are you a vegan? Now that explains a lot. Think I'll go have myself some steak for lunch. Mmmm, steak.

For 15 years now, Apple has always been on the cusp of doing great things, yet somehow those great things have NEVER materialized. Each year, they do a little worse than the year before. And each year they dream about doing something great... and yet it NEVER happens.

CyberDog is gonna be THE nextgen browser - Never happened
Copland is gonna be THE nextgen OS - Never happened
OpenDoc is gonna revolutionize computing - Never happened
iPod is gonna be the nextgen PDA - Talk about scope creep. Jeez!
OS X is gonna eat into Windows market share - LOL
... and a hundred more examples. Please feel free to post them!

The difference between their failure and Microsoft's overwhelming success is simple. Microsoft knows how to reach boldly (Apple does this well too), but then follow up with a relentless execution. Apple, on the other hand... idly watches their dreams evaporate or become subsumed by competitors efforts.

The harsh reality is that Apple is nothing more than a niche retailer (some might even say abuser), carrying so little weight in the actual computing world... that they are largely ignored outside their sense of "fashion". They receive an inordinant amount of free press, only because the authors of the non-technical articles actually believe if they put a cute imac/ipod/titaniumlaptop on their desk... they might trick others into believing that they are tech-savvy. The REALITY, is that any self-respecting technophile laughs under his breath as soon as he sees one of these signs of idiocy.

One thing is certain, you can't acuse Apple of being a has-been. More accurately, they are a never-were.

#12 By 3653 (63.162.177.140) at 9/23/2002 6:00:28 PM
The only part of my message that could be accurately described as "drivel" would be my slight compliment to Apple about them reaching boldly.

And nomdlev, you did an excellent job of not addressing a single one of my points. A thorough "believer" in Apple... would welcome the opportunity to take my lies apart one by one. Of course, you are likely too busy being the foot servent (some might even say biatch) of Steve Jobs. It always amazes me how Apple fanatics love to berate Gates and all his evil money... yet they will fall over themselves to give that same money (and more) to the multi-billionaire Steve Jobs.

Its time to take off the blinders, my friend.

As a final shot, I would like to point out that wall street seems to agree that Apple is toast. Their stock is trading at 1994 levels. That means every $1000 you invested in Apple in 1994 is worth exactly $1000 today. That same $1000 invested in Microsoft in 1994, would be worth $8000 today.

ps... I'll be watching for your reply. I want to see you defend my little list of failed "revolutions" that Apple is responsible for. You'll find the list as post #18.
